Maps Not Showing in Mapsource

I have installed GPS File maps on my E-trex Legend HCx once a few years ago and was able to do so with no problems. Having recently moved, I re-downloaded and installed Mapsource and downloaded both the Alabama Topo (http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/view/142/) and the South East United States Map (http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/view/101/).

Mapsource seems to have installed without any problems. It links with my GPS and can take waypoints and routes off of the GPS unit. Following the installation of Mapsource I ran the Alabama and SE USA installers and then attempted to open the Alabama and SE USA maps with Mapsource. Unfortunately, Mapsource did not recognize any maps on my computer. I tried using the "Ctrl+O" function to open the maps from Mapsource with an error when trying to open both the installer and the the individual .img files. Reading through the tutorial, I determined that I should use the Mapset Toolkit to try to install the maps. I went through the process and received an error, "Family ID exist."

At that point, I realized Mapset had already found the maps. I went to Mapsource and started searching through menus and found it has already recognized the map installation to some extent as well. Under the "Utilities" menu the "Manage Map Products" selection brings up a screen that shows the SE USA maps, their status, and their location. Still, nothing shows up under the "maps" tab. I have tried zooming in and out but no zoom level shows anything other than the base grey gridlines that show up in Mapsource regardless.

If anyone knows what steps I am missing or anything else I need to do to get the maps installed so I can send them to my GPS I would be most appreciative!

You are running around in circles! You don't need mapsettoolkit - that's for mapmakers. You don't "open" maps in Mapsource. Most maps from here come with an installer that you run, then you should be good to go. See this: http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/tutorials/how-to-open-maps-in-mapsource/

You select the map with the dropdown menu, like this:

If you don't have a dropdown menu in Mapsource then go to View > Show Toolbars > View

You won't see anything under the Maps tab until you select an area with the map tool. But first you need to choose the map with the dropdown menu as shown above. See this: http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/tutorials/how-to-load-maps-on-my-garmin-gps-unit/

Now there are issues with Windows 7 64 bit... are you using that? If so, then there are some glitches, but I will let somebody else explain those if needed.  :)

I did manage to get it to work, though not in quite the same manner. I tried restarting my computer with the GPS plugged in and gStart automatically ran and gave me the option to "Plan a Trip" or "Install Maps." I selected the "Install Maps" option and the SE USA map came up and I was able to select the areas I wanted and send them to my GPS. So, my problem is ultimately solved.

As far as getting the map to show up in Mapsource; the view option for the toolbar is selected but only the zoom magnifying glasses, the "Select a Map Scale" and the "Select a Map Detail Setting" show up. From what I understand, I have to have two maps installed before the map drop down will show up. I'm not sure what I should be seeing with just one map installed. There is still nothing showing up in the map or mini map windows.

You may have incorrectly installed Mapsource. I'd suggest removing it, then do this EXACTLY as described, which will give you both Basecamp and Mapsource: http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/tutorials/how-to-install-mapsource-if-it-didnt-come-with-your-gps/

At minimum, you should have an option in the dropdown menu that says "no map". But there is no requirement to install two maps for mapsource to function properly. I can't understand why you don't have a map dropdown menu if you are showing the View toolbar however. WHen you go to View > Switch to Product, are there maps listed?

What version of Windows are you runing and what version of Mapsource? What is gStart? Never heard of that before.

Which mapset(s)?
I had the same issue a few weeks ago when I replaced my 32 bit machine with a 64 bit.
Seams a mapset with a 32-bit installer needs to be installed first, then the mapsets using a 64-bit installer will work.  Try 'My trails' - it is small and has solved this issue for others.
