Old User, New Glitch for 60csx. Shows only roads.

I have been using Mapsource and the NW USA Topo map set for some years now.  Something changed quite recently and I can't trace it.  I have had great luck using this and other map sets on my Garmin, but today, all I see on the Garmin are the transportation / roads and no topo information.  I am using W7 64 bit.  After reading on here about the 64 bit issue, I decided to try downloading Basecamp, then downloading the MyTrails installer.  Basecamp seems fine, all my previous compatible files from this site are appearing in my data, and they display nicely in the new program.  Still, however, they don't seem to be appearing on the screen for my GPS.  Waypoints transfer successfully.

Anyone have any thoughts as to why my maps when uploaded to the device are only showing the roads and nothing else?  Thank you very much.

Sounds like Garmin's profile issue.
Changethe profile to recreational.  If in recreation, change to some other than back to recreation.

Looks like the "profile" is a feature on a unit I don't have.  I have the 60csx.  It has a "settings" area but nothing that is broadly characterized as "recreation".

maps4gps

Correct; no profiles on the older units like you 60csx or my 76csx.

The 64-bit issue is about one of those mapsets as the first mapset installed on the computer.
If MapSource and/or Basecamp display a mapset, there is no 64-bit issue.

Been awhile and sound stranges, but I think the display of the contour lines are tied to land cover.
Try Main Menu / Setup / Map / Points /   - set land cover to auto
also do this for:
/ Map text /        - land cover  to small

Thanks but no luck.

The only other thing I can think of that I did recently that I haven't in a long time is that I used TOPO to upload some waypoints instead of Topofusion.  I don't even remember why I did this but it shouldn't make a difference.

Bump.  Still having these problems.  I would prefer not to reinstall everything but that may be my next step.

Fortunately I know how to use paper maps with compass the old fashioned way.  Technology fails, invariably.

I have had a 60csx since 2006 and have never seen this problem. It sounds like you are only seeing the basemap on the 60csx. Here are my troubleshooting ideas...

* go into the map setup menu and be sure the mapset is listed and enabled.

* check to see if the memory card is securely seated and the cover is in the locked position.

* connect the 60csx to your computer, go to the interface menu setup and enable mass storage mode (USB disk mode). If it doesn't appear on your computer, then the device doesn't "see" the memory card.

* If you can access the memory card, what files are stored on it? There should be a folder named Garmin with a file named gmapsupp.img inside.

* Check the size of the gmapsupp.img file on the card. Now start Mapsource and use the map tool to select all segments in the map. Look at the total size of the segments you've selected and compare that to the size of gmapsupp.img on the card.

Here are the things I have tried.
I tried reformatting the 2gb micro-sd card.
I selected only 2 tiles from the NW Topo USA map set so I could repeat the testing faster than building the whole state at the same time.
I reset the GPS map settings to default.
When I go to a known point in the mountains on the map tile using the "Find" button on the unit, it shows a light green tile surrounded by the "xxxxx" pattern when the unit has no data.  This indicates to me that the unit has received the map.  When I zoom in on the particular tile, some labeling specific to the tile displays, such as the name of the designated wilderness area.  What I don't get is any topographic map features at all, nada.  For other tile sets all I get are the transportation lines for roads.  This is not the "Basemap" that comes with the unit, because once you build a mapset and send it to your GPS, the original "Basemap" gets wiped away.

So basically, Basecamp appears to transfer the map correctly as per all the instructions available on this great website.  My GPS shows indications of having received the map files, but for some reason they are missing the topographic information, or something has gone crazy with my unit where it now fails to show this.

I will try testing with some other topos not in my area to see if this happens for everything.

Thanks in advance for any ideas or tips.

Clutching at straws here:  Have you tried adjusting your land cover and marine settings in Setup>Map?

First off, the Basemap NEVER gets deleted on the GPSMAP60CSx, it's burnt into the ROM in the GPS, and viewable even without the datacard. You have to go to the Map settings to enable or disable mapsets.

I forgot that the Basemap is always there.  I just went in and selected to show Basemap and all I get are points, some of which are numbers, some of which are towns, cities, places.  No water boundaries, no roads.  I have selected "Restore Defaults" frequently to ensure I have not erroneously selected some dumb setting that is causing all this.

So a question is that if my Basemap is not performing normally, in other words not showing basic features as it should, then perhaps the problem is with this unit.  Maybe it got wet one too many times and is on the fritz. :o

If you basemap also has issues, I suggest calling Garmin's tech support.

Have you tried the land cover, marine, and day/night settings?

Boyd

You might try reflashing the firmware. Not sure if that would fix your problems but I don't think it could do any harm: http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=1245

Tried reflash of the firmware.  I am not sure Garmin is worth calling.  This unit is 5 years old perhaps?  Definitely out of warranty, and since one of the main reasons for using the maps in this website is to avoid the outrageous pricing for the proprietary maps that Garmin sells, I am not sure why they would care that these maps are not working.  I have never purchase a map set from Garmin in any way, and I don't think it is worth paying and using an unlock code on this one just to verify that it can no longer display topograhic lines, only transportation features and geographic labels for features that are not being displayed.

I tried loading a few tiles from the Grand Canyon in SW USA Topo.  Attached is a photo of what I get on my screen.  Again, I have reinstalled the firmware.  On the screenshot it shows the color green which is for public lands I believe, and it includes labels for features in the park.  You can see the scroll over that read Grand Canyon National Park.  I even panned over to somewhere in the park that had a very small transportation feature in red, that when you scroll over it reads "Ramp".  The only thing that no longer comes through are water features and Topo lines.

Thanks everyone for your patient help.  I will check back in from time to time, but I may need to buy one of the new ones.

This is very strange. Make sure you have the following set:

Menu > Menu >Setup > Map > Info: make sure the desired map has a check next to it

Menu > Menu >Setup > Map >General > Detail > Most

Menu > Menu >Setup > Marine > Marine Colors > off

Menu > Menu >Setup > Points: set everything to Auto

Menu > Menu >Setup > Text: set everything to Auto

These are the only settings I can think of that might cause an issue. Also confirm that you have really sent the portion of the map you need. How big is the gmapsupp.img file on the memory card? Make sure the card is firmly seated in the unit and the metal cover is in the latched position. Try another card if you have one. If you are only looking at the unit's basemap, that could explain what you see. I don't know, it's possible that the green shading and roads are part of the basemap. You could confirm this by pressing Menu > Menu >Setup > Map > Info and un-checking any maps that are listed there. This will ensure that you are only seeing the basemap. Now compare that to what you were seeing when you thought the topo map was enabled.

Problems with the contacts on the card slot are fairly common on the 60csx, and defective memory cards are not unheard of either.

FWIW, if you purchase Garmin's 100k or 24k topo products on DVD, they are not locked to a specific GPS and can be used on any device that you own.
