GPSr Units / Basemap for eXplorist 500
« on: March 06, 2011, 06:58:01 PM »
I accidentally deleted the basemap for my Magellan eXplorist 500. Does anyone have this file or know where I can find it. The MegaUpload link isn't working for me.

Most the people here have mapping GPSr units. Though I haven't used the eTrex H, I have used the eTrex Vista, the eTrex Vista H, the eTrex Vista HCx, the eTrex Legend HCx, and the eTrex Venture HC. Of all these, only the Vista tended to lose a signal in heavy cover, and the vista has the older GPS signal processor.

That being said, sou should find the reception of the eTrex H satisfactory, as it has the same receiver and signal processor as the other units of the high sensitivity eTrex line.

As a lover of maps, I must point out that you cannot view maps on the eTrex H. You can view a track of where you've been with waypoints, but no maps.

I am in SC, and I have used My Trails. It's great mapping! Some of the trails in my area have changed since the map data was generated. I am unable to find more up-to-date map data. I was also interested in testing out the automatic routing feature of the Garmin maps.

Hello. I have a Garmin eTrex Vista HCx and would like to take advantage of the cheap rails-to-trails Garmin maps as well as the free GPS file Depot maps. Of course, I would like to be able to access both of these maps simultaneously on my device. Is there any way that I can install a GPS File Depot map onto a micro SD card with rails-to-trails installed side by side?

By the way, "download" is the only available format for the Garmin rails-to-trails map.

The H (high-sensitivity) makes a big difference. I have had an eTrex Vista and an e Trex Vista H. Night and Day. Without the H, I lost signal regularly and suffered poor accuracy due to few satellite acquisitions--even in lightly wooded areas. With the H, I can keep a signal in most buildings!

As far as cheap goes, you can probobly fetch an eTrex H off ebay for around $40 dollars if you're patient.

Corporate conspiracy aside, I'm happy with the little guy--perhaps only because I don't know any better. I did buy it new for $80.00 w/ free S&H off eBay...

Furthermore, I successfully loaded some high detail topo/road/hydro onto my vista.

Thanks for the help!

I appreciate it, Mike. I love my little vista. I look forward to tapping into the awesome maps on this site. At first, I thought I was stuck between the feeble basemap and the expensive garmin maps. I'm excited to learn otherwise.

Thanks for the comments!

I am looking to download detailed topo for the South Carolina area.

Also, there are times when I'd like a little more road detail.

Is there any hope of getting any of the GPS File Depot maps on my Garmin eTrex Vista H? It has 24MB of data but no memory card slot. Will I have to buy the garmin maps?
