Title: Getting error gsmapp.img file corrupt
Post by: russelln114 on December 08, 2017, 03:39:26 PM
Hello. For many years i have enjoyed using this site to load topo maps to my garmin. The process is fairly simple. I download the map set then open it in basecamp. From there i shade the areas i want then i install it on an mirco sd card, plug it in my garmin and bingo i have my maps. Lately I have been having a problem installing the map on the card. The other day I installed a map that i hade  in basecamp. I then installed the card in my garmin and it did not show under maps. Puzzled I pulled the card and looked at the card on the computer. I clicked on the card went to garmin then to gsmapp.img. When I clicked on gsmapp.img it came up that the file was corrupt. I do have another sd card with the same mapset on it and when i click on it shows me garmin then when i click on that it showes me the maps. It doesn't show me the file gsmapp.img just the maps after i click on garmin. I was able to copy the maps from one card to the other after i first errased the gsmapp.img file on the card in question and now both cards show the maps on garmin just fine. I can't seem to figure out the problem. I even uninstalled the entire mapset from my computer and downloaded it all over again in basecamp and it doesn't work. i have even reformatted the card and nothing. I am using windows 10 Can someone please help.

I can't understand what you're trying to say here: "when i click on it shows me garmin then when i click on that it showes me the maps. It doesn't show me the file gsmapp.img just the maps after i click on garmin."

Where does "it" show "the maps"? On the GPS? On the computer?

When I plug the first micro card into my computer it will show me all the map file names  on the card. When I plug the second card in the computer it will show me that gsmapp.img file and nothing else. The first card has the same maps as what i am trying to load on the second card. I guess what i am trying to say to make it easier is that I am trying to load maps from basecamp on to my sd card and It wont load to the sd card. The only thing it loads is this gsmapp.img file which I have never seen on my cards before when loading maps.

Still don't really understand, sorry, but here are some ideas. If you correctly load maps on a card from either Mapsource it will create a folder named Garmin and place the map in a file named gmapsupp.img.

Mapsource always does it exactly this way, and it erases any old map that was previously stored on the card (since gmapsupp.img is the only file name it uses).

MapInstall is a bit different, if it knows you are using a newer GPS it will give the map file a unique name (older Garmin GPS units only recognized gpmapsupp.img) so installing multiple maps will result in multiple .img files in the Garmin folder.

But if you are using an older GPS - or if MapInstall can't figure out that you have a newer one - then it will name the file gmapsupp.img for maximum compatibility. But if you try to add a second map using MapInstall, it will try to merge them into a single gmapsupp.img (I think ;)

You must format your cards as FAT32 or they won't work in the GPS but will appear to be OK on the computer. Larger cards may not be compatible with older devices. And I think 32gb is the max that works on any (since you need to format as FAT32).

There are other issues that could cause an .img file to not be recognized on the GPS, such as too many segments.
