Title: Maps of US Territories, minor outlying islands, commonwealths, etc.
Post by: giantsfrey on April 28, 2014, 08:31:36 PM
I live in Saipan, an island in the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Islands. This is near Guam, another US territory in the western Pacific Ocean.
I recently bought a Garmin e-trex20 with the UStopo maps bundle, but these maps don't include the islands out here. Thus, I have recently made my own little ad-hoc Saipan topo map via a google earth overlay saved as a KMZ file. It works okay, but is far from professional.

What I would like to know is:
1) Does anyone have (or know where to find) better maps of such islands? I'm sure there are people in the Virgin Islands as well with the same concerns. Hashing, geocaching, and hiking are all big out in these parts, and there must be a demand.

2) Does anyone want the map of Saipan that I made, for either their own use, or to critique or give me suggestions?

Have you tried this mapset:

When you say a google earth overlay you made, do you mean the arial imagery from google earth? If so there are copyright issues sharing that and it found not be posted here.

no, i used a publicly distributed USGS topo map. i just used google earth to align it, size/scale it, and save it as a .kmz file

that map, by the way, is okay. it's much better than nothing, but not really any better than the image i made on my own. i'll try it out and see how it goes. it's at least a better resolution, but it lacks topographic detail. thank you, and i'll keep an eye out for better/newer maps cropping up
