Title: GPS 76csx help
Post by: duckhunt on February 04, 2014, 09:08:07 AM
I have this GPS 76csx unit  which is like new.
I have been told by Garmin that this unit has been discontinued.
What topo and trail maps can I use with unit?
Also can I use aerials with this unit?
Where do I start?
I would appreciate any help as I am just getting started with This unit.
Thank you

It's true that the 76csx is discontinued: https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/on-the-trail/discontinued/gpsmap-76csx/prod351.html

However this was a very popular model, especially if you have one of the older ones with the siRF chipset. One big advantage is that it floats.

You will need a microSD memory card to load maps - 4gb is probably all you'd need for an older device like this. Just about any of the topo maps on this site (.img files) should work. Garmin "custom maps" (.kmz files) will not be compatible. Unfortunately, the 76csx is not compatible with any type of aerial imagery, you need a newer model for that.

Boyd,
I have a micro sd chip that came with the unit.
How do I begin to down load the maps? What would be the best map for hunting, camping & hiking in Arkansas?
Thanks again for your help!

Check the Tutorials link at the top of this page. You will want to use MapSource for your GPSr.

I believe the original card that came with that model was only 128MB, although later models might have shipped with larger ones. Either way, that should be enough to get you started. You could get a bigger one later if needed.

The maps are free, so just download whatever looks interesting and see if you like it. No clue about what is best for Arkansas, sorry.  ;)

More specificically:

Download/Install Basecamp first - it will install a basemap that Mapsource wants (Mapsource won't install without it): http://www.garmin.com/en-US/shop/downloads/basecamp

Now download/install Mapsource: http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=209

After it is installed, then choose your map(s), download them and use this tutorial first: http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/tutorials/how-to-open-maps-in-mapsource/

When you're ready to try a map on your GPS, follow this tutorial: http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/tutorials/how-to-load-maps-on-my-garmin-gps-unit/

One other question about downloading can I download directly to the gps unit or do I need to load to my computer then download to the gps unit?
Thanks so much  again for the help.

"Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime."

And then some just don't like fish. :)
