Title: BU-353 and Garmin nroute
Post by: dlw1146 on February 29, 2012, 07:22:55 PM
Well, I found out the hard way that a GlobalSat BU-353 does not work with Garmin nroute.
Anyone have any ideas on how to get it to work with nroute?
Or, suggestions for a navigator that it will work with... free I hope.

It should be no problem to get it working with nRoute. Download GPSGate. It will translate from NMEA to Garmin's protocol on the fly and provide a "virtual port" to use with nRoute. It can also give you additional virtual ports if you like, allowing you to run more than one navigation application at the same time.

I use this myself with nRoute and a Navation USB GPS stick. Have been able to run nRoute, MobilePC and OziExplorer at the same time. See: http://gpsgate.com/download

Thanks for replying.
Downloaded and installed GpsGate.
Have a 'yellow' icon on status bar.. means its working I understand.
When trying to connect in nroute, I get a 'com3 is not available' message.
I've tried all com settings in nroute and gpsgate... nothing works.

Any ideas appreciated.

Yellow means that the software is connected to the GPS but there is no position fix. This thread seems a bit off topic for GPSFiledepot. I suggest you go to  http://www.laptopgpsworld.com/garmin-mobile-pc/ where you will find extensive discussion of using nRoute and GPSGate (do a search there). I have used them on a Windows 7 tablet computer, Windows 7 netbook and Windows XP netbook without problem so I'm sure your issue has to do with config settings.
