I am testing creating a 'map' using a contour interval for each 7-1/2 minute area as is used on the printed USGS 24K quad map.  This would allow the maximum detail from the source data without 'overcontouring'.

Do you think a changing CI (to reflect the topography) would be useful, or would you find it confusing, etc?

Attached is a gmapsupp.img file (in overlay/transparent mode) for the Blanca Peak 100K (30x60') quad in southern Colorado (LR corner at 105W & 37.5N) where the 32 component 24ks use 5, 10, 20 & 40 foot CIs.

Your comments would be appreciated.

Map Making Support / Transparent Maps
February 08, 2009, 06:36:46 AM
Has anyone had experience with transparent maps for a large area in MapSource?
MapSetToolKit will only make a dummy or quad outline 'preview' map if the .img files are transparent.  This is not too helpfull in MapSource, as by the time the data shows for the individual quads (contours in 30x60 quds) not much more than a single quad is showing for selection.  When zoomed out, the main reference to which quad is which is the coordinates of the selection cursor location.
Oz has said it would be OK to place this data set (2.2Gb) on the server in two (or more) sections, but I have been concerned about the selection process in Mapsource.

Map Making Support / Topo Map Contour Interval
February 02, 2009, 10:41:16 AM
Does anyone have or know where to get a list of the contour intervals used on each of the USGS 24k topo maps?  I remember a file on one of the USGS servers about 10 years ago, but their 'ask a question' sites are saying such a file/list does not exist.  Thanks.

Map Making Support / NHD and GM10
December 06, 2008, 06:07:57 AM
Has anyone used GM10 to view/process the NHD data in 'Pre-staged personal geodatabases'?

I tried a couple of files but they only show lines,  points and basin? polygons; no waterbody nor area info.  Mike at GM thinks it is because that info was not included, but the files are not of much use without it.

BTW - the NHD viewer page has the 'systems unavailable'  for Dec 6 message.

Map Making Support / Why not use GM for contours?

Oz,
What is your reason for not using GM for contouring?
