GPSr Units / Nuvi - is Garmin for real?
« on: September 07, 2015, 01:38:09 PM »
Have a new auto and was looking for a navigation gpsr.  Garmin's website currently shows 67 Nuvi models available.
Do they really expect someone to comprehend all that to make a proper choice?
How many of those units are obsolete and will soon be dropped and no longer valid for lifetime upgrades of the maps?

Site Support / color in mapset descriptions
« on: May 18, 2014, 10:47:10 AM »
I was wanting to change the text in my state topo mapsets so users would be aware there is an issue with the 64 bit Windows environment and not just Windows 7.  When the few word change was saved the text was no black instead of the red it had been.  The software doc indicates there is an icon to click on for changing the color of text; however, I do not see it.
The Nebraska topo was the one I was testing.

Oz,

Looks like you web host did not plan for over 1 million downloads.

It just went from over 999 thousand to over 1 thousand.

Thanks for the site and hosting our mapsets.

You and all others have a wonderful holiday season and new year.

Map Making Support / Limits on older GPSrs
« on: March 31, 2012, 07:51:44 AM »
I have placed about 1-1/2 Gb from a mapset on a 4Gb card (only data on the card).
I do not have a 2Gb card and my 76csx will not use the gmapsupp.img if I place it on a 4Gb card.
Do the older models have a 2Gb maximum card size, or is there some other reason the 4Gb card can not be read?

Site Support / Request Delete
« on: February 23, 2012, 04:41:02 PM »
OZ:

I sent you a PM on Feb 4, 2012 about deleting 2 of my mapsets and possible some others.
A few days later, I also used the 'your account/files:manage maps:request delete to request a delete on those two mapsets.
A few days ago I also mentioned this in one of the threads you were posting to.

So far I have not received a response to any of the above.  Have you seen any of the above?

Since I do not recall it ever being mentioned, what is your/gpsfiledepot policy/practice on deleting mapsets?

Map Making Support / TIGER 2011

Census TIGER 2011 files were released late yesterday afternoon.

Any thoughts on how often a mapset should be revised/updated?

That is another 'feature' (like 3D) that only Garmin knows how to do.

Site Support / Mapset uploads
« on: May 15, 2011, 06:46:04 AM »
I have been trying to upload revised windows and mac mapsets.
Worked as usual on the 10th.  Today in Manage Maps, upon clicking the 'Upload Windows File' or 'Upload Mac File', I am receiving "A problem with this webpage caused Internet Explorer to close and reopen the tab' in a one line window at the bottom of the screen and 'We are unable to return to gpsfiledepot.com' etc.   in the main window.

FYI - Microsoft installed a new version of IE on Friday.  As uisual for them, it has so many bugs it is essentially usless.

Map Making Support / 2010 Census TIGER shape files
« on: July 16, 2010, 05:07:46 AM »
The 2010 TIGER shape files will be released by State from Dec, 2010 through Feb 2011.

This is a departure from the Fall/4th quarter releases of the past three years (2007 was delayed until March, 2008; 2008 in Dec 2008; and 2009 in Oct 2009).

From email to Census - 'Since we are in a Decennial Census year, the scheduled releases of the geographic files follow the scheduled releases of the demographic data.   The shapefiles will be released on a flow basis, coinciding with the release of the redistricting data beginning in December.'  In the past, about 5 States (in some random order) are in each weekly release over a 10 week period.

General Discussion / City Navigator & hydro
« on: April 16, 2010, 11:43:04 AM »
I am working on a contour overlay/transparent mapset for the US.
I have seen posts and looked at the CN maps on Garmin's website and agree that the hydro in Garmin's City Navigator is fairly general.
What are your thoughts on expanding the scope of the contour line mapset to include NHD hydro, physical feature GNIS points, etc.?

Map Making Support / Contour interval for non-US maps
« on: March 16, 2010, 03:20:55 PM »
I have been doing some tests contouring of the world using the 90m SRTM data.

I expect the display scale for the detailed contours would be about .3 mi (.5 mi on the OR300) which is about 1:150,000 or 1:125,000.

1.   Would a good series of contour intervals in meters(depending on slope) be:
       50 - 25 - 12.5? - 6.25??
   or 40 - 20 - 10? - 5?
   or 30 - 15 -  7.5? (which is close to 100 - 50 - 25 feet)

2.   Should the contours not be 'touching' at the zoom level they first display at, or would zooming-in one level for 'clarity' be acceptable?

3.   Any value to including physical features like summits, etc - most of the coordinates in the NGA data base only record location to the nearest minute (6100 ft / 2000 m)?
