Mapsource not cooperating

I downloaded the self-installing SE US topo "exe" from this site. The installer ran correctly. Nothing showed up in Mapsource (also downloaded today), so I tried to open something in the map folder established by the topo installer. No files in the folder were acceptable to Mapsource.

So, I downloaded the toolkit and ran it per instructions on this site. Got an "OK". Still nothing in Mapsource and no way to load anything.

Under Mapsource Utilities > Manage Map Products, the topo shows in the resulting window as unlocked.

So how do I get this map data into Mapsource so I can load it onto the card for my Oregon 450?

I'm stumped and frustrated.

:) Tried Basecamp. It worked! Praise the Tupperware Gods!

All you needed to do was run the installer, that takes care of everything. No need to "open" anything. See this: http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/tutorials/how-to-open-maps-in-mapsource/

Possibly your problem was with having MapSource open when you did the install. If so it would not know the new map was there, as it only checks for available maps upon the program opening.

Closing MapSource and reopening would have solved your problem with seeing the map in MapSource.

Ok, i'm new here, I am having the exact problems with mapsource, I can see the map,( in this case it is the Oregon topo i downloaded here mt77_or.)  under Utilities>manage map products. but it is not loaded under "Maps" tab.
I have two mapsource Icons on my computer after I downloaded mapsource with the tutorial from here and the oregon topo, mt77_or. of the two mapsource icons, one looks like an open box with stuff coming out titled Mapsource_6163, and the other is from downloading the oregon topo, it is titled mapsource and looks like a CD with NSIS across the top quarter, and a blue and gold checkered shield bottom right, when I open the latter the mapsource installer looks just like the pictures in the tutorial, I follow the directions and never get anywhere, do I need to change the destination when it asks me in the installer, i assumed it was auto.
I saw that previous guy got it to work with basemap but wanted to get it done with mapsource, please help!

I got mapsource to work , I had to go to the "view" tab then "switch to product"  I can't believe how simple it actually was, your tutorials are great, if I can use them with success, even when I try to botch it, they are great!
thanks again,

I got this to work on my Vista machine, but it doesn't want to work with my Windows 7 machine.  My Mapsource doesn't even look like the picture in the tutorials. When I tried to upload from my GPS, I get the error message Some Products cannot be opened because the following Mapsource products are not installed Hawaii Topo.

Any suggestions? Did they just plug a hole?

This may be another registry-related Windows 7 issue. There are a couple other threads here about installer problems on Windows 7 - I think they only affect the 64 bit version though. Is that what you're using?

Ghostwheel

Yes, and I found the fix. Thank you for telling me, as I would never have figured a registry problem.
For anyone else who finds this thread and needs help, I found it here.
"The problem seems to only happen if the HKLM\Software\Wow6432Node\Garmin\MapSource\Families registry key is missing (like it is on a fresh install of Mapsource). If it already exist, the auto installer works flawlessly."

I added this registry key and this fixed it right up for me. I just had to go to View>switch to Product> and there were my maps!
