I am new to all this and would love some help.

I have downloaded some maps NE topo, etc. GREAT stuff.  I am trying to create a route but my route line goes straight, or point to point, and doesn't track the actual road or highway?

Any help would be appreciated.

This happens because the map doesn't contain any routing information. Almost none of the maps on this site are capable of creating routes. They can be used to show your position, but cannot provide directions for getting from point A to B.

If you need routing, you will probably want to purchase Garmin City Navigator.

But that doesn't mean you can't make a route, and use it on your GPS (depending on you GPS).

For off road purposes the straight line stuff works for me. I just set via points at trail intersections.

After I ride, I download the track, edit off the stuff I don't need, save it, change it to a gpx file, and then I have a route for next time I ride that trail. Of course you have to have a gps that accepts routes.
