I am new to using a hand-held GPS.  I have a Garmin Vista hcx.  I live in Western North Carolina, and want to put in maps for trails in this area.

I downloaded map100, and also Trip and Waypoint Manager from my Garmin CD.  But, I can't make heads or tails of what I have.

Where do I find existing trail maps for this area, and how do I put them into my Garmin?  So far, all I can get is MapSource to show me main highways in Asheville.

About 2/3rds of the way down there's one about "How to install MapSource if it didn't come with your unit".  Start there.

Hi Dan, I see that you have the Trip and Waypoint Manager CD, and that is a version of MapSource. You might want to get the MapSource update for that from Garmin as the version that ships with the Vista HCx is a bit outdated. Once you have MapSource opened, you would need to switch from the basemap to the trailmap to select what you want. You will want to follow this tutorial to load the trailmaps: http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/tutorials/how-to-load-maps-on-my-garmin-gps-unit/

I would also suggest downloading a TOPO map for your area also and send that with the trailmap.
