not transparent

Been making img files from both gpx and shp files. GPX are all mine, the SHP files are from the US forest service. All seem to go well (most of the time) but when I make a map set with NM topo all I have is the topo, no local made map is visible. Have trried differing levels and settings in mapedit to no avail. My trail maps are visible by themselves in both mapsource and in the gpsr. Have selected transparent all thru the process. What (hopefully ) simple thing am I missing.

While zooming on the GPSr I have noticed that when it reloads new data I get a glimpse of my road/trail map underneath the topo. Along with my road/trails showing up the background is totally crosshatched. This also shows up when my road trail map is the only one selected. I have a feeling this cross hatching is the problem but have no idea where it came from or how to get rid of it.

I get the crosshatching for the area in the display window which is outside the mapset which is enabled.  When the center of the display is outside the mapset; 'nothing' may be displayed.

Thanks for the reply. If i only select my road/trail map the whole screen is crosshatched. When viewing the two together (mapset) I see none of the road/trails displayed only the topo and it appears normal. Have no transparency in the mapset.

I'm not familiar with the maps you're using, but this sounds like a draw order issue and not a transparency issue. As maps4gps has said, the cross-hatched pattern is what you see in an area where no maps are loaded. So when you turn everything but the trail map off, you're seeing through its transparent background to this.

But when you enable the other mapset, it is being drawn on top of the trails and covers it up. Maybe I am not understanding exactly what you mean though. You can alter the draw order and transparency of existing maps using the gmaptool utility. Do a google search, it's floating around somewhere. But be sure that you understand what you're doing and backup your maps because you can do a lot of damage if you're not careful with gmaptool.

Thank you both for your help and response. Let me try to explain more clearly. I have a trail map I made that when in the GPSr by itself will show up, however it's background is crosshatched. Thats problem #1. It also shows in mapsource fine.  The other map I'm using with it is NM Topo downloaded from here. I made the trail map to be transparent hoping to use it over the NM Topo. When both are in the GPSr as a mapset I only see the NM topo. Thats problem #2. If I select only the trail map (in the GPSr) it shows up ok but crosshatched. However, when the screen redraws (in topo view) after changing zoom levels I get a glimpse of the trail map as the screen redraws. This leads me to believe the trail map with it's crosshatching is not transparent and is under the Topo. I'm aware of the situation of the crosshatching showing up where a map ends or has blank areas but that appears not to be the case here. It could be as you say Boyd, something to do with draw order but that is something I have no knowledge of. Can you amplify on that?
Problems are fun because you learn from them but are also a pain. Again thanks.

It's transparent now. Thanks you are a hero for sure. Just deleted original map and used mapset tool kit to install another with draw set at #1. It's working out beautiful in the GPSr.
