I followed the tutorial on how to install maps on a microSD card using Mapinstall on my Mac. Installation on the card was successful. I inserted the card in my new garmin 64S and turned it on. When I choose "Maps" the only maps I can find are the ones that came with the Garmin. Mapinstall said the map was unlocked and eligible for use. What am I doing wrong?

After reading several threads, I tried changing the name of the file to NWTOPO.img, but that didn't help. Mapinstall sees the file, but Basecamp just sees an untitled SD card in the unit with no map listed.

How did you format the card? It must be FAT32 or the GPS will not recognize it, although it will work on your computer. If you are using a big card (64gb) then it cannot be formatted as FAT32 without some kind of tricks. Also not sure if current versions of MacOS will properly format a card for Garmin, have not tried this on my mac for awhile.

There have also been cases where invisible Mac files caused issues on Garmin devices. There are some great free utilities for checking this kind of thing, but unfortunately MacOS Sierra broke them and the author has stopped development because of health issues. If you are running an older version of MacOS, then check these out:

Aside from this, how large is the file on the card? It's possible that you did not send the whole map to it.

Thank you for the reply! I used a Sandisk Ultra Plus 64GB UHS-1 Class 10. It was formatted as ExFAT. I did not reformat it before adding the image file which is 1.36 GB. I just reformatted it as FAT32 (which I can do on a Mac) and reinstalled the map. Now it recognizes the map!

Cool!  8)

FWIW, you will never need a card anywhere near that large. There are other, less known limits to Garmin's map format that pretty much guarantee you will hit a limit before loading 16gb of maps.
