Oregon 450 issues - Basecamp says installed, Oregon does not

OK, please bear with me.  I have had this Oregon 450 for about 4 years now, and have been muddling along using OSM maps mostly, I think.  Yesterday, I lost the SD card that had that map on it.  So, I dropped in a new card.  It is FAT32 formatted (just verified).  I look at it in Windows explorer, and the file dates are correct (downloaded from this site last night, US Midwest Topo).  Installed Basecamp (downloaded yesterday, so should be current version) and used that to send the maps to the Oregon.  Last night, I was overly tired and frustrated, so I am back at it this morning.  Basecamp says the map is installed in the unit when I try to resend it.  When I try to change the selected map on the Oregon, the only one that shows up is Worldwide DEM Basemap, NR.  I read something sometime yesterday afternoon/evening about someone else having a similar issue and that turning on/off something with marine settings fixed their problem, so I tried that too, and nothing.  Any suggestions?  Thanks, all!

Specifically, what are the names of the files in the Garmin folder on the card? Do the maps work correctly in Basecamp (can you zoom in and out and see all the details)? For troubleshooting purposes, I would delete the contents of the Garmin folder on the card (make a backup if you want), then use MapInstall to send JUST ONE map to the card. Now see if that works.

Older Garmin devices only recognized a single file name, gmapsupp.img and used a special method of enclosing multiple maps in this one file. My experience is that this sometimes doesn't work properly on newer devices like the oregon. These new devices allow multiple map files with any name, as long as the .img extension is used.

If you send a map to the internal storage on your Oregon, MapInstall will figure this out and give it some kind of descriptive name, such as midwestopo.img or whatever. But if you send the map to a card, it defaults to the old system of creating a single gmapsupp.img file.

So another thing you could test is sending the maps to your Oregon's internal storage (space permitting) and see if that works. If so, you could just copy the files to the Garmin folder on the card.

FWIW, there used to be a nice wiki for these models but it no longer exists. Most of the site is still accessible through the wayback machine at archive.org however

I will have to check the name of the map, but it is working fine in Basecamp.

I didn't know about it changing the file name, I will have to dig into that this evening.  It is in the \garmin folder on the sd card.  I did know enough (from previous trials and errors) to put it into that folder, at least...

I ended up deleting the southern states map file, so now I only have the one map on the SD card, and I am still seeing the problem.  But, I can try installing it to internal memory and see how that works.

And I started this journey/adventure a few weeks ago and found that the old wiki site was gone.  I forgot about the wayback machine, though.  Nice tip!  I even joined a FB group for the Oregon 450T in the hopes that they might be able to assist, but that group has been dormant for the last few years.

Update - there is not enough room at the moment to add US Midwest OSM Topo.IMG to the internal memory.  On the SD card, it (and US South Central OSM Topo.IMG) are currently installed in the \garmin folder.

The attachment shows everything in the internal \garmin folder.

Do you have a lot of Birdseye imagery in internal memory? Assuming that you do, because otherwise there should be pleny of free space. You could try moving that to the SD card - just copy the BirdsEye folder to the Garmin folder on the card and then delete from internal memory. (might be a good idea to copy to your computer also).

That would open up plenty of internal space so that you could remove the card and do some methodical troubleshooting

Birdseye folder is completely empty...  FWIW - I also installed the same maps (with Basecamp, using the same file and the same right click and add method) to my Nuvi 42, and it transferred just fine.  The only thing that seems odd is that the G drive (letter assigned by default when I connect the Oregon) is also a network drive when I plug my laptop in at work.  However, when I right click on the G drive with the Oregon connected, it says I have 600 MB free and 301 MB in use.  The file system is FAT (again, by default).  I am thinking that I might need to try putting a smaller map area into the internal storage to get my by for now, but I really would like to use the maps on the card in the Oregon.  Also, thanks for the help!

Oh, and one other thing...  When I look at the sd card in the Oregon through basecamp, the name of the only folder on the card is "User Data".  When I look at it in File Explorer, it is "Garmin".  Not sure if that means anything or not, but it is worth noting, at least I hope so...

But wait, there's more!  I was looking at this again this evening (still, more, whatever) and clicked on Maps, Install maps in Basecamp.  An error message popped up stating that I had a corrupt file on the unit.  I removed it, and now I am trying to install just the midwest topo file to the SD card directly installed in the Oregon.  Let's see what happens!

Boyd

Yes, then try sending just a small part of the map, I thought you were saying the internal drive was full.

"user data" is just a term that Baseamp uses, has nothing to do with the drive name or letter.

Still messing with this...  I successfully installed the midwest topo file on the SD card using JaVaWa, but it seems that the Oregon 450 is not recognizing the sd card when on battery power.  Is that possible?

Boyd

I assume you checked the obvious, to see if the card was properly seated and the cover was latched down? This has been a frequent problem with Garmin's design. Otherwise, I don't know why it would act differently depending on the power source, never heard of that.

siameseretriever

Yep, everything is sitting right.  I even reformatted the card to see if that would help.  I am going crazy with this.  I am also wondering if the fact that my (undocked) laptop still thinks the g:\ drive should be attached to the network.  I don't think so, as I can open the G:\ folder and see the Garmin stuff there.  Maybe a trip to the Garmin store in Chicago (while it is still open, for another few weeks) will be in my future Monday.

Today's update...  I plugged in the Oregon to the laptop, and this time, the drives showed up as H:\ and J:\.  I think this is a good sign, since I was finally able to resolve an issue with WGI cartridges not loading to the unit.  Next up, trying the maps again!

Still fooling around trying to get these maps on my Oregon...  I get an error that reads: There was a problem communicating with Oregon 450 (unit ID...) An error occurred while reading the following files:  Garmin/GPX/geocaches.gpx

Not sure what this means, but I am pulling out the last of my hair on this.  I read on FB something about copying all files from the SD card, resetting, and then pasting them back.  I might try that next.

Boyd

Where does that message come from? Basecamp? If so, sounds self explanatory to me, Basecamp thinks the file Garmin/GPX/geocaches.gpx is corrupt. Delete it an see what happens (make a backup copy first if you want).

Sorry, I don't know anything about geocaching. But I have seen Basecamp complain about other .gpx files at times. Generally, I just ignored the error message and everything else worked OK.
