Labels for map making ?

I'm following the multi-step tutorial for making a map. After getting through step (4) I began to wonder how labels become part of the shapefiles created.
I can add labels for each layer in the QGIS Project but how does this transfer to the final map for my GPS.
Sorry if I'm not asking the question correctly as I am not too savvy with computer use.

BTW I'm doing this all with QGIS on Mac OS X 10.8.4.

The "labels" are added to the shapefile IF they are actually in the table. Just adding a label doesn't do anything because at the very end all the layers become one giant file because that is what Garmin expects.  the NAME column is what names each item on a Garmin map.

Thanks for the clarification on the labels.
I suspect Garmin controls other aspects of the final map (for example: color and width of road types,font style for labels,colors used to differentiate between State and National Forest......)

You can control this yourself by inserting a .typ file in your mapset. There are several very nice programs for this, I use TypViewer myself. These articles are a little old but they will point you in the right direction:
