Help needed to reload Nuvi 5000 back to stock and get MapInstall to work.

I've searched and searched, but cannot find what I need to reload my Nuvi 5000.

Here's the story.....

I bought the Nuvi 5000 near the end of it's retail time.  Mid-2009.  It came loaded with city navigator 2008.  I loaded city navigator 2009 and 2010 (via Garmin.com download).  I ran the listed files till 2013.

I downloaded 2013.10, installed it and ran it successfully, With Garmin Update 3.80 until I purchased a  Garmin 64s handheld. That was 4/2015.

That's when I started to fail.....

Even though BaseCamp doesn't match my thinking style, it worked fine and I've had success, until I tried to share maps between the Nuvi 5000 and the 64s via GarminExpress and a transfer tab within the program.

Failure after failure led me to make mistakes and delete files that I now realize that I need. I also updated the Nuvi 5000 to version 4.10

Yes, I did select all visible files (on the Nuvi 5000) and copied them to my Mac, prior to the major moves, which is running 10.6.8  I have tried to reinstall them, but something still isn't right.

I can't remember every move that I have made, but I have renamed files and deleted files in an attempt to create enough room on the Nuvi for a larger map.  As errors started to come, I ran out of ideas and stopped, only to try again, later.

As it stands now, I have been able to

1. Get the Nuvi 5000 to make tracks or traces that show where I have been, that BaseCamp will import and recognize.
MapInstall Version 4.1.1 (4.1.1) and BaseCamp Version 4.2.4 (4.2.4)

2. Do all interactions except "send maps with MapInstall when done."  MapInstall crashes and creates an error report, which is followed by an Apple Error Report that states this, with the header and footer missing.

((When I start to try to find the file that is stated above, I can't find it..... at all.  So, I renamed a file, with a similar name and extension to the name listed above, reran MapInstall, but nothing gets resolved.))

3. The Nuvi will Display roads and traces, but not detailed maps. When I go into settings, then into maps, Then into Map Info, (if I am recalling the procedure correctly) it states that there isn't any detailed maps that are installed.  It used to display the 2013 City Navigator that I had installed on the sd card.

4. I called Garmin, again, and this time they were willing to try to help me resolve the problem.  They suggested the "hold the Power Button, while pressing the screen in the bottom right hand corner" which didn't work, but made me remember that I have tried that trick in the past, and it was difficult to make it get started in a reboot.

They did end the conversation with the typical, "You need to reload the Garmin software, you need to update your mac,.... etc."  I tried to tell them again, that I was the problem, and I really need the files, even via email, to put back into the Nuvi 5000.

5.  I have downloaded a number of  maps, from this web site, and they work great!!  I have been able to get BaseCamp to recognize them and then send them to my 64s.

6. I have been able to get GarminExpress to recognize the Nuvi 5000 and download a 2016.20 map into BaseCamp, but MapInstall creates an error when trying to send maps to the Nuvi 5000.  Garmin Express works fine with the 64s.  If I have the original files, I suspect that I will be able to load the 2016.2 file onto an SD card.

So, that is where I am...... I am REALLY hoping that someone on this forum has a better understanding as to what is going on, and can help me reload the Nuvi 5000, so that the MapInstall program will work correctly.

I kinda suspect that the Garmin update from 3.80 to 4.10 has something to do with this, too.

But I don't know, and really need someone's help.......

Please, be kind and limit the "Name calling" and "it's Bricked!"

Thanks, in advance.

I don't exactly know what I have done,...... maybe I stumbled onto some success, though.

MapInstall, still throws an Apple error report with the same file listed, but I have somehow gotten the Nuvi 5000 to recognize and install the detailed maps.  And this was via GarminExpress.

After loading the detailed maps, I checked the maps with BaseCamp and also installed in the vehicle.  From the little that I have seen, they look good.  The GPS display also looks "Sharper and more detailed."

So, something went right....

The 8 gig SD card doesn't have enough space to let me load my OSMaps, or Desert SW maps.

After I'm rested, I need to figure out what is "bloating" the memory space.

Thanks for following along.

And a thanks to the Garmin Tech Reps, from today.  It was a great surprise to have them pleasant and willing to help. Even though they didn't have the answers that I needed, they had great attitudes!! This is compared to the other times that I have called.

Sorry, you lost me in all of this. Do you have a lifetime map subscription for the Nuvi? Sorry for stating the obvious, but you will not be able to get new maps to work unless you have a valid license.

One issue with using a Mac to back up a gps is that the Mac creates a bunch of invisible files when you make a copy. I don't know if this is an issue on the 5000, but those files have been known to cause problems on some older Garmin devices. There's a little utility to remove them when you eject the Nuvi here: http://www.javawa.nl/cleaneject_en.html

I had a Nuvi 5000 and it was a cool GPS for its day. Personally, I wouldn't spend much time messing with it today though. It is really slow compared to newer devices and the screen is also rather dim. And I never understood why Garmin didnit put a battery inside this unit. It's an unusual model because it is Linux based.

My only general observation is that I would use Mapsource with this device instead of Basecamp. That is the software that was used at the time this device was on the market and Basecamp/Mapinstall should offer no advantage.

But I think you are on the wrong website. These forums are primarily for the discussion of the maps offered here. You might want to start a thread over at http://forums.gpsreview.net/categories/garmin-auto-forum-garmin-nuvi-forum but I doubt that anyone else really uses a nuvi 5000 anymore.

A Nuvi 5000 is the old style map system and you can only install a single supplementary map on the card, which can't be larger than 4 GB.  If you have tried to put on multiple .img files, that will cause your problems.

Mostly not true.  I have both new models and a 5000.  It is just as fast and the display quality is better (higher resolution) and clear.  I continue to use it as it has both a video input for a backup camera and an external antenna port.  Both of those are very useful in the vehicle I use it in.

I run the newest versions of CNNA on it with no problems.

Sorry, I just can't agree regarding the speed. I still have mine and have fired it up once or twice over the past few years and think it really fails to measure up with current models. The screen was also a big problem with polarized sunglasses (mine are prescription) and even without them, the brightness level seems weak.

I use my devices with very complex maps that I make myself. They put more stress on the Nuvi than a Garmin map so the responsiveness is noticeable. In other words, I am not an "average user".  ;)

If you are happy with yours and it meets your needs, that's great. But a device like the Nuvi 3590 will run circles around the 5000, give you real 3d terrain and rendering, a much nicer glass multi-touch screen, lifetime maps, traffic and more. At $150, I just don't see any reason to stick with an old device like the 5000

If you really need the external antenna and video input, I can see why the 5000 might still be appealing. I guess it also has audio output and maybe an mp3 player which some people still seem to want.

I use it because it's paid for, and it also has video input.  I haven't noticed a speed problem, though.  I haven't used Mapsource, recently.  I have used it in the past.

I have had an 8 gig card in it for a few years, though. Right now, the 8 gig card is 2.73 gig from being maxed out.

I have looked at the same model.  It is appealing, because I don't like playing the "Computer Programmer" game, when the maps become outdated.

I'm sure that the newer stuff is "faster." .....and with time, my gear will probably get/need replacement.

I am confused here because you said

Quote6. I have been able to get GarminExpress to recognize the Nuvi 5000 and download a 2016.20 map into BaseCamp, but MapInstall creates an error when trying to send maps to the Nuvi 5000.

How were you able to download 2016.20? Did you purchase a map update from Garmin? If not, then you will not be able to get the map to work on your Nuvi. Garmin maps are copy protected and locked to a specific GPS device. They will work on multiple computers in Basecamp, but only on the GPS they were purchased for.
