Garmin GPSMap78
« on: October 13, 2015, 08:45:06 PM »
Hey, I am very new to this forum and really new to GPSing.  Going on a hunt near Flagstaff, AZ so I have purchased the Garmin 78.  Due to receive it tomorrow and hunt on Friday.  Any thoughts, reviews, problems or secrets about this unit that I should know?
Thanks

Boyd

With only one day to prepare and absolutely no experience with GPS devices, I think this will be tough. Did you purchase any maps along with the GPS? You should realize that Garmin devices like the 78 do not include any useful maps. They have something called a "basemap" that is very crude and generally useless.

So you will want to download some maps from here or other sites on the internet, or purchase Garmin maps. Judging by the amount of confusion we see when people download the maps here for the first time, that might be a bit more than you want to get into.

But if you want to give it a try, download and install Garmin Basecamp first:

Then pick a map that interests you here and download it:

Now follow this tutorial to install the map on your computer:

And use this tutorial to send the map to your GPS:
