I am doing some field work in Africa and would like to see Google Earth imagery on my GPSmap 62s device to identify areas with good tree cover while I am in the field and to see good river crossings.  Not sure if this is possible and feeling frustrated
Internet access is very expensive here so apologies if this has already been covered on the forum.
Thanks in advance!

Not Google, but your GPS is compatible with Garmin Birdseye imagery. Cost is $30 for unlimited downloads which is pretty reasonable. The subscription is good for a year, but you can keep what you download forever. Not sure what the coverage would be in your area. I have not used it for awhile,  but I think you can download it for free and look on your computer to see if it meets your needs. You would then need to purchase the subscription to install it on the GPS. Just connect your GPS to your computer and run Garmin Basecamp, it should prompt you on how to download.

The other option would be to make Garmin "custom maps" from your own material. This guide shows how to make small maps, but you would want some software to help if you make larger maps.

Here are a couple programs that can help with this. However, the size of such maps is limited to 100 images that can each only be 1024x1024 pixels.

This program is supposed to help you make custom maps from google imagery. Have never tried it, but it will have the same size limitations (100 images).

Really, if Birdseye has decent imagery for your area I think it's the best solution. There is no limit to the size map that you can create this way and it's much easier than making your own maps. Of course, you are going to need internet access for any of this and satellite imagery can result in large downloads.
