crop vector data to an irregular shape
« on: June 07, 2009, 01:48:12 PM »
I like to crop vector data to an irregular shape (area) such as cropping roads to a National Forest boundary.  Has anyone found an automated way to do it? Global Mapper does not.

Thanks,

Perry

I think I read about something on http://freegeographytools.com/ that did but Les is going to have to answer that.

I started using postgis.  I can give you the queries if you think that'll do it for you.

What I do is draw a polygon anything inside the polygon stays anything outside goes.  thats how I crop my maps to the actual state now.

The freeware GIS MapWindow can do this.

http://freegeographytools.com/2007/intro-to-mapwindow-iv-advanced-vector-tools

Make sure the GIS tools plugin is enabled, then load in the shapefile you want to clip, and the polygon you want to clip with (or create the polygon with the shapefile editor). Then use the Clip Shapefile With Polyon tool to clip the shapefile with the polygon, You can clip point, line or polygon shapes.

Sweet, that'll be even easier than postgis.

The freeware GIS MapWindow can do this.
That's the one I saw, and as I have some cropping coming up, a timely response.
