hello Boyd;
What would recommend for a simple, easy to use backpackable, long battery lasting tablet for hunting. I already have a handheld but i want something with a larger screen for scouting trips.

I honestly don't have a recommendation for that. For something that is widely supported and user friendly, you should probably be looking at either an iPad or Android device. Garmin stopped supporting navigation on computers awhile ago and if you want to go that route it will be a "science project" with a lot of "gotcha's".

I don't know that you will find an affordable tablet that meets your requirements for "backpackable and long battery life". Trimble makes some really nice devices but they are very expensive and won't run any user-friendly consumer type software: http://www.trimble.com/Outdoor-Rugged-Computers/yuma.aspx?dtID=features

But I wonder, would the Garmin Montana meet your needs? It has a beautiful big screen that is much better than other handhelds. I love mine, and it feels more like a "portable computer" to me than a "handheld GPS". It would be compatible with any Garmin maps: https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=145&pID=75226

The forums here are really only for discussing the maps on the site. For a broader perspective, I'd suggest visiting http://www.laptopgpsworld.com/

Better you can have another standby battery which help you lot.

I wouldn't do it.....  What GPS do you have?  Oregon 450s are being given away ($200) at the moment.
