Bulk USGS Data

Stumbled across this today while looking for some data: http://seamless.usgs.gov/bulk.php

Unless I am missing something here, it sounds like you can send USGS a hard drive, receive it back a month or two later full of data, and the only charge is the shipping. If so, that's pretty cool.  8)

Quite a list of available stuff too - like the full DRG dataset (238GB) or the full 1/9 arc second (LIDAR) dataset (2.03 terrabytes) or ful DOQ dataset (16.9 terrabytes).

Anybody ever use this service?

'Fraid I can't eat that much ice cream.  I'll just be downloading via GM as needed.

Bulk data has been available for many years for a fee.

Perhaps this is meant as a 'work-around' to the recently terminated seamless server.

This might be nice for an initial 'seed', but I do not think it is going to work for data sets like NED which have bimonthly updates of new and improved data.

Seldom - can GM still access data since EROS terminated the seamless server?
I used to be able to access its replacement site ('The National Map'), but never found how to request data for an area by bounding coodinates.  Since seamless was terminated, the site will not go beyond the initial page.  I suppose it already has more requests than it was designed for.

Tiled USGS data is available using WMS and you can add these services to GlobalMapper. See here: http://viewer.nationalmap.gov/example/services.html

I've just loaded a screen bounds of 10 meter NED using GM 13.  Export should be complete in about half an hour.  I'll report back if there are any problems with the export....The export worked fine.

Boyd - interesting website.  Not sure I have seen it before.  Not sure what to do with the info as my programming skills are a few decades old.

According to phone conversations with EROS, the tiled data is 2-3 months behind what was available on seamless.  I downloaded a tile earlier this summer and the files in the download package were dated over 6 months earlier.  Not of much use to keep up with the latest NED data USGS has/had available.

Unfortunate seamless was terminated before the end of the calendar year.  USGS was trying to upgrade/replace all the poor quality and oversampled 10m NED by the end of the fiscal? year and had completed all but a very small number of quads.

No "programming" is needed!  :) For any service on that page, click the WMS Link button, then copy the URL of the page that opens. In GlobalMapper, use File > Download Online Imagery > Add WMS/OSM/TMS Source >  WMS > OK. Delete the Server URL that is shown, paste in the URL that you copied from the USGS, then click Get List of Available Data Layers > OK. Now you can use this like any other online source in Globalmapper.

But I was getting errors from some of those links. Looking back at my own bookmarks, this is a more useful WMS source: http://www.nationalatlas.gov/infodocs/ogcwms.html

To make it simple, use my instructions above for adding a WMS source to Globalmapper and just paste this into the Server URL field:

http://webservices.nationalatlas.gov/wms?SERVICE=WMS&REQUEST=GetCapabilities

Then click Get list of available data layers, and you will have the full hierarchy of USGS raster layers available in Globalmapper.

Thanks.

However, http://www.nationalatlas.gov/infodocs/ogcwms.html is for data in the National Atlas; NED data, etc. which was on seamless went to the National Map.

Not sure how i missed this but thats sad that seamless went away; especially prior to 1 October when most things get shut down.  Too bad they won't do USPS since flat-rate would be cheap.

Very unfortunate timing as USGS is/was in the process of replacing the remaining oversampled 10m data with true 10m data by the end of the year (fiscal year end, Sept 30 ??).
