What am I REALLY getting with Garmin lifetime updates?

I've read Garmin's explanation a dozen times and I THINK I understand what's going to happen and I'm not happy.
So I get 4 updates a year. But it says I'm updating what is IN my GPS Map 60CSx. It doesn't say it's updating what is in my computer! The entire City Navigator N. America is IN my computer, all unlocked. All of it is not going to fit in my unit at one time unless I buy a 16 gig chip and spend a couple days loading it in! So am I only updating what's in my unit and am I going to lose the update for SoCal and Nevada when I upload Florida and the Gulf Coast states which would mean I'd use 2 updates for just loading the maps for a trip and then back to what I need for home. What don't I understand?

First is that you can't buy Lifetime for 60CSx. Lifetime is only for City Navigator preinstalled in device.

If you own Lifetime for nuvi, than you get up to 4 updates a year. On each update you can select several predefined areas to install on device and/or install full map on PC.

If you have map on PC, then you can select any area and send it to device. Full CN NA prepared on PC is about 1.7GB.

That is not completely true. If you purchased City Navigator on DVD, then you can purchase lifetime updates for it. If you purchase City Navigator via download or on a pre-loaded card, it will not be eligible for lifetime updates.

You might be right, but I can't find any definitive info on Garmin site.

Seldom

MojaveJeeper.  Your 60CSX will only work with a 4GB card, but that will hold CNNANT for the US and Canada (per popej 1.7 GB) with lots of room for topos from GPSfileDepot.  Most of the updates will be  new residential developments and other urban area changes, so I doubt you'll see many updates to unpaved roads.  I haven't found any trails on CNNANT.  For that try http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/view/53/ , garmin.openstreetmap.nl (no contours, but routable trails), or, if you are in Utah, http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/view/518/ .

Typing "DVD update" into the search box on the Garmin home page brought these up

QuoteIf your device was preloaded with City Navigator NT map software or you purchased a full version DVD of the City Navigator NT map software, then there may be a Lifetime Map Update subscription available to purchase for your region. With a Lifetime Map Update subscription, you can download up to four map updates per year for the life of your Garmin unit.

QuoteThe message "This device is not eligible for an update because previous map versions have not been installed." occurs when a map update is being loaded to a device without either a preloaded version of the same map or a full DVD version of the mapping.

If a previous mapping version isn't owned, a DVD version of the City Navigator mapping will need to be purchased from https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=253

Once the DVD mapping has been installed onto the computer and unlocked to the device, you'll then be able to run a map update as per the nuMaps lifetime subscription purchased.
