BLM on Western Land Ownership overlay maps

Does anyone else have a hard time telling the difference between the BLM sections on the overlay and the actual basemap color that your GPS makes the map?  I can hardly tell the difference in the two colors, so for me it is hard to tell what is BLM and what is private in those sections.  Is there anyway to make it easier to tell the difference?  On the Garmin landownership cards I have tried the private stuff is all marked in white whether it is in the forest or down mixed in with the BLM and state stuff.  Just curious if there was a way to make the private white on this land status overlay map?  Thanks for the help.

Seldom

These colors and/or patterns are specified by the map author in his TYP file, and both the land ownership maps I'm aware of from this site are "transparent" overlays, so the land ownership areas are a combination of colors and transparent pixels.  On the map I'm working on now, which is not transparent and has everything on it I use solid color polygons for land ownership and specify that they have an early draw order.  For that application a nice tan (#E0DCAF) works pretty well.  It's dark enough to tell from the background, light enough so that trees, contours, roads and rivers read well against it.  Unfortunately, if it were broken into a pattern it also would be hard to read.

Thanks for the info.  I would really like to see a topo with the land status come out that had anything that was private be white, anything BLM that orange color, state the Blue, and forest service the Green just like an actual BLM map.  The cards ive seen that are available for purchase are like this and they are just like looking at an actual BLM map.

The darn base map color for the Garmin GPS's seems to be the same color as the BLM overlay portions and I am hoping to find something that will distinguish between these two so you can more easily tell where you are at when you are in the BLM checkerboard stuff hiking around.

Baseman color a problem? Turn off the basemap.

Tried shutting the basemap off, but the color of the background is still the same yellow as the BLM sections.  I called Garmin and they said there is no way to get rid of that yellow color that the topos are overlayed over.

Oh, then you're not seeing the basemap, that is the background of the topo

i have no trouble seeing the difference.  The colars are designed to match the color of BLMs maps

Private is left blank because if it is blank, it is private

I am happy with the colors and I am not going to  change it.  But if you want to change the color yourself, you have my permision as long as it is only used for personal use.

There is a file called M0001ca8.TYP in the installation directory.  Go to http://ati.land.cz/gps/typdecomp/editor.cgi and browse for the typ file and then select edit

Scroll down to: Polygon #10) Type 0x4f [Scrub], Drawing order: 1 and select edit

Next to the box that says eef036 there is a button, click on it and select a different color, then click save

At the bottom of the page is a a button that says download typ file.  Click on it and replace the file you opened.

Thanks, that worked perfect for me.  I appreciate you putting this map together and letting me tweak the color for my GPS.  I can now see all the BLM sections perfect.
