Generic GPS unit loading maps?
« on: June 01, 2011, 07:55:13 AM »
Hi guys.
I would like to buy a very cheap generic GPS unit from ebay, example in the link below.
Could anyone please tell me if I could load the dartmoor national park map found on this website onto it?

Thanks!

Would be easier to give you the correct answer if you had a link to the map in question and data on the GPS unit and not the photos???

I'm going to say it probably won't work as the bulk of the maps here work only on certain Garmin GPS units.

Lol, I gave a photo so you would see how bad of a unit I was talking about. I was pretty sure it was not going to work so I was just confirming it.
Which Garmin would you recommend for the map below? My budget would be around 150 but I will be going for 2nd hand I think, so that's not very helpful for you.

I don't know what the eBay unit is, but it's not Garmin and therefore won't work with virtually all the maps on this site.

The map you want to use is a specialized type that Garmin calls "custom maps". It is a form of raster imagery - basically a picture that could contain satellite photos or scans of paper maps. This kind of map file will only work in a few of the newer Garmin handheld units and will not work in any of Garmin's automotive (Nuvi) units.

You would need a Garmin Montana, Oregon, Colorado, Dakota, GPSMap 62 or 78 series handheld to use that map. See the models listed here and click on the specs tab. Look down the list -   if it says "Custom maps compatible: yes", then the unit will be compatible with that map: https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=145

Thanks for all the information, I will check those out now. Are there any there that you would recommend or stay away from?

I like the Montana (it's new) but it costs $$$.  ;D

None of them meet your desire for a "very cheap generic GPS unit" I'm afraid. We have seen the Oregon 450 drop to about $250 on sale - this is a very good choice IMO. The Dakota 20 currently sells for about that much at Amazon.

The Colorado series has been discontinued, not sure if you can still find them, but they might be the cheapest option if available.

You are correct, that GPS can't use the Garmin Custom Maps. You should be able to use something from here:

The smallest GB map they have is 268 MB and I think the 60c only has 50MB, am I missing something or can you cut the maps down to the only parts you need?

Check with them but a MapSource version should have selectable tiles so you only send what you need/will fit
