Map compatibility with Garmin Quest?

Hi all,

I'm a newbie to using maps that aren't the paid, official Garmin maps.  I have a Garmin Quest, which doesn't use the new, more compressed Garmin NT-style maps.  (Quest2 does, but Quest does not.)  Will non-Garmin maps be compatible with my Quest?  Is there something I should look for to determine whether a given map will be compatible with the Quest?

The only maps in the NT format are Garmin's City Navigator series. There are no NT format maps on this site, so you should be good to go.
