Did BaseCamp replace MapSource or is it [BaseCamp] strictly for topo maps?

Many thanks...

It didn't replace MapSource, but for newer GPS units it has many features that MapSource doesn't have. If you just using City Navigator maps with a GPSMAP 60CSx & a Windows PC, you might be better off using MapSource. But if you have an Oregon 550t, a BirdsEye subscription, and some TOPO maps you are going to want to use BaseCamp.

BaseCamp has a few important new features that are missing from Mapsource. It is capable of reading maps directly from one of Garmin's pre-loaded memory cards, for example. So if you purchase one of the 24k topo's on a memory card, you can put it in a USB card reader and use it on your computer. It can also read the maps that are pre-installed on a GPS, such as City Navigator on the Nuvi. Mapsource can't do that; you must install the maps on your computer.
