Why does this map show up twice on the map choice screen???

I see this is a map maker problem from previous answer is this correct?:

"The California TOPO is one example and the author does know of this issue. It's a trade off as that map is made from two mapsets that are layered; one a planimetric map and a transparent contour layer."

::)  Anyway it works, but not much detail, ( creek, river names etc....)

Yes it is correct; this is normal for this map.

Not exactly. you could say that it's a feature. As the map is made from two mapsets, one being a planimetric base and the other being the contours in a transparent overlay, you can load either or both with MapSource and combine them with other maps. So you could just pick the contour layer and overlay them with your City Navigator 2011 mapset.

Thank you, I guess what is confusing to all is the files appear identical in their description on the Nuvi. With most of us PC nerds seeing that, it appears to us as a  duplication in computer speak.

Does anyone know how this topo compares with Garmin US Topo -24K ($ 129 ), on the Nuvi, which I understand cannot use it's features fully?

Garmin's 24k topo's have routable roads and can be used for turn by turn navigation. The road data should be more accurate since it comes from Navteq instead of TIGER shapefiles. Garmin's topo's have DEM (Digital Elevation Model) data embedded in them. This produces shaded terrain - even on most Nuvi's. I believe this began with the 2x5 and 8x0 series, and all current models support it. The 37x0 series Nuvi will actually render the landscape in 3d view, but other models only show shaded terrain in 2d view. BaseCamp will show 3d views with the 24k topo's.

Garmin's map probably has a more extensive POI database.

But you have to wonder how often those roads get updated...

Here's an example: a Road that was realigned shows the same on both Garmin TOPOs & CNNANT with the old alignment and matches the California TOPO. Ibycus USA planimentric map made from older Tiger data shows the new alignment as does Google Maps. I know it's a small thing, but aren't the devil in the details? It's not like this realignment happened recently.
Garmin TOPO U.S. 24K West
Garmin TOPO U.S. 100K
Garmin City Navigator North America v2011.20
Google Maps hybrid

You can always use this map as an overlay to your installed nüvi maps.
