Converting GPS maps to TOPO! compatible maps

I have several state maps sets that I use in my Garmin GPS.  I was curious if there is a way to convert them into a format that I can access with my National Geographic TOPO program?

I want to convert an arizona map in format .gmapi to whatever I need for TOPO to recognize it.  Is this possible?

I'm not aware of anything that will do that either.

National Geographic has lowered the price on their state series Topo! products. I just picked up the NJ/PA map from REI for $50 (maybe even cheaper elsewhere). It consists of scanned USGS 24k, 100k and 250k paper maps with vector overlays for the roads. But National Geographic has obviously scanned the USGS maps themselves - they look really nice, much "cleaner" than the terraserver downloads we are all used to.

FWIW, these maps can also be installed on the Magellan Triton series GPS. I tried this on my Triton 1500 and the maps look nice. They make efficient use of memory too - I got all of NJ into a 500MB file.
