The Dakota 10 doesn't include any "real" maps when you purchase it, just a crude basemap. In order to create routes, you need to install a map that supports routing. This would typically be Garmin's City Navigator North America map which you would need to purchase and install. Garmin's 24k topo maps are also capable of routing but they are expensive and only cover a few states each.

Almost all of the maps on this site do NOT support routing. BTW, it has just been confirmed on another site that the Dakota 10 does not support Garmin's new BirdsEye aerial imagery download service. If you think you might want to use BirdsEye, you might consider exchanging the Dakota 10 for a Dakota 20.
