Using The Maps/Garmin Software / Maps for off-road navigation
Last post by DRDANTDC - January 01, 2026, 01:01:23 PM
I just got a Garmin Montana 710. Which maps do I need be able to use the Roads & Trails feature? I want to be able to create routes using pavement and gravel/dirt roads. I am not tech savvy BTW!

Hi redderek,

I double checked that the "Windows" (img) and "Mac" (gmap(i) were correct.  Make sure Basecamp is closed and c:/programdata is not hidden!  What Boyd wrote is correct.

It is important that when you unzip the mac version that you do not copy that folder, you need to click to open the next level which will end in .gmap, that is what you want to copy.  If you go too far you will see product data and a couple other files.

Unless you do something wrong or have some corruption someplace this should work each and every time for my map or any other map makers maps who offers the gmap/gmapi version of their map

Which map are you talking about? This one?

https://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/view/861/

If so, why were you using mapsettoolkit? There is nothing in the instructions saying to use that. Mapsetoolkit is very old software that was used by map creators to build maps. Unless you are using some *really* old files from this site, you don't need it. And any map that old is probably not worth using anyway.

The instructions for using that map are very clear and simple, just follow them:

"To view in Basecamp on Windows use the "Mac" version, after extracting and opening to mapaname.gmap, mapset can be placed in the Windows C:/ProgramData/Garmin/Maps folder"

The author is also pretty active on the forums and he will probably respond here soon. But first, let us know if that is the map you are talking about.

Using The Maps/Garmin Software / Issues opening map in BaseCamp...
Last post by redderek - September 28, 2025, 08:58:24 PM
I downloaded the Japan topo .img file. Then I followed the steps, once I was able to find MapsetToolkit, per the web page
    https://www.gpsfiledepot.com/tutorials/how-to-load-.img-files-into-mapsource-with-mapsettoolkit/

MapsetToolkit went through the steps and the DOS windows and came up as complete. I see the Mapset installed in the small window. Then when I started BaseCamp, it came up with "There is a problem with the Japan installation. Please re-install and start BaseCamp again."

I did this a couple of times by uninstalling Japan from the Mapset installed window of MapsetToolkit. Still getting the error.

Nice thing is if I uninstall Japan and then try to open up BaseCamp, BaseCamp works fine.

I'm not familiar with that tool and it kind of has an early 2000's look, but...success!

I was able to solve this issue with the RGN_Tool.exe. Dropped 029201000400.rgn file You cannot view this attachment. into the RGN_Tool.exe "File Drag Zone"; modified the boot.bin and fw_all.bin HWID from 292 to 1111 ->You cannot view this attachment.  saved modified renaming to 00f201000400.rgn.

Then dragged modified file, 00f201000400.rgn over Updater.exe and flashed successfully!  All languages are now available.

Do this at your own risk! Your mileage may vary.

Quote from: sockmonkey on September 13, 2025, 08:35:18 AMAnother making your own contour option is in .mp format.  This can be done with Global Mapper (paid) or dem2topo

Of course, if you have Globalmapper, the whole thing is pretty simple. You can create a polygon outlining the area you want on a map, then go do File > Download Imagery > Terrain Data and choose either NASA SRTM or ASTER GDEM to download the DEM data within that polygon. Then it's as simple as a mouse click to generate contours. They could be exported as an .mp file or any other format you like.

But Globalmapper is pretty expensive commercial software. Well worth the cost for me however, have used it very heavily since around 2007. They update it every year but I have only upgraded a few times, currently using a pretty old version.

They do have a free trial version, but it has some limits as to how much data you can export. You could give it a try though, maybe the free trial version would work long enough to do this one project for you?

One option is you make them yourself such as pyhgtmap, strm2osm or hgt2osm.  I sorta tried them, but there more involved than I care for.  If you go to https://extract.bbbike.org/ they have a format option of contours in .pbf format and you then select a bounding box and they send you a download link for your file(s)

https://garmin.opentopomap.org/ has near global coverage and the offer separate map and contours downloads in .img format, you may find your areas of interest their.  Their maps are on the spartan side, downloads are slow and occasionally the site doesn't load

Another making your own contour option is in .mp format.  This can be done with Global Mapper (paid) or dem2topo ("beerware")

Map Making Support / Elevation contours

Good afternoon, friends. I found a good website where you can download elevation contours in .pbf format.

http://develop.freizeitkarte-osm.de

However, there is no data that I need here, namely Egypt, Chad and Indonesia. Does anyone know where to get the country elevation contour data in .pbf format?
