Using The Maps/Garmin Software / Re: MAP INSTALL

MERFANI,
You are seeing the same error that I am for MyTrails.  The author attempted a fix but I still have the problem that you do and the author has no more suggestions.  All the other maps from this site install fine on the card unless I add MyTrails to the set.  There seems to be a problem with installing MyTrails on a Mac with MyTrails itself or with the Installer 4.0.   It appears to affect both the Montana and Nuvi 855.

I've been using OZ's California topo http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/view/28/
and recently added  maps4gps's California topo 2011  http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/view/523/

Interesting!  How do I find out what the draw priority is of a map from this site to see
if that might be the answer?

Also, what happens if I enable two topo maps of say, California, at the same time.  I notice that
some have more info for a specific area than others.  For example, the Yosemite topo has more
topo features labelled for the Leavitt Meadow area on CA108 than the California topo for that area.
What happens if both are enabled for the same area and have the same draw priority but aren't transparent?

Why would there be two listings for the same map(though the red [] labels may differ) on the Nuvi with the card loaded?

I'm trying to determine how to select maps from the map info list when some maps appear more than once.  How do I tell what the entries contain if I can't remember what maps were selected when the set was constructed(for older GPSr that can't rename the .img files)?

Isn't the update included in the current download?

Thanks for the info.

How do I tell on the Nuvi 855 what the .img set contains? I have a microcard with a gmapsupp.img file on it that contains California, Oregon, Yosemite, Nevada.  I know this because I built it in mapinstall.  But on the Nuvi I see two entries for some of the topo maps which I assume means that the Nuvi gmapsupp.img file must hold the City Navigator North America set as well as the topo sets that appear twice(one copy on the card and one on the Nuvi?).

Also, what do the numbers in [] in red under the maps in the map info list mean and the comments after that in black, eg. "none" or "yosemite to" ?

I also notice that the California topo from this site usually shows even if the City Navigator North America map is also selected but the Oregon topo does not seem to show unless one unchecks the City Navigator map.  As far as I know none of the topo maps that I have from this site are transparent.  Can someone explain how this works?

The install finally completed without the MyTrails mapset so it seems that that was the set
causing the error message.  Maybe it needs to be recompiled.

Can one have more than one .img file on a microcard or GPSr(Nuvi 855)
with different names and still select maps from either?

Ok.  I tried the mapsets individually, starting with the smaller ones.  It appears that MyTrails is the one causing the problem.  When I tried other small sets; Yosemite and Oregon, for example, the installation worked.  I am now installing all sets except the MyTrails which will take some time to see if it works.

I intend to use the maps on a Nuvi 855 but that was not connected while I was installing on the card in a reader.  The card has some Audiobooks on it and a California and Nevada mapset but as I understand it the existing .img file should be overwritten my the new .img file.

I downloaded and unzipped the following mapsets:  Yosemite,Nevada,California,MyTrails, Oregon from this site.  Then I selected all maps in each set and clicked "send Maps".  After the first time that I got the error I downloaded all the sets again and combined them again in MapInstall 4.0-
same error.  The size bar each time I selected a mapset in Mapinstall showed enough space remaining.

I'm trying to install multiple maps on a Mac on a microcard in a reader.
I keep gettting a message that doesn't make sense regarding
space on the card.  What's going on?

"map set is approximately 2048.9 MB, but only 3296.5 MB is available in the destination."

General Discussion / TAHOE MEADOWS TOPO INFO MISSING
April 27, 2012, 07:44:28 PM
Why is the topographic information missing in the
area of Mt. Rose and Tahoe Meadows on the Nevada
custom topo map from this site?

I have a post out to NGS Explorer forum asking about digital sources.
Here is the map that shows the information

Recently, I was hiking cross country in the Sierras
near US 50.  I came across some old logging/jeep roads
but they were not on my GPSFileDepot California TOPO
OR on my USGS topo map.  It would have helped a lot
if they had been.  I noticed that the TAHOE Regional map
that I had at home has all the USFS roads including the ones
that I came across.

How do I get this info on the
GPSFileDepot California TOPO?

I knew about UTM coordinates but haven't learned to use them well enough.
I just read another tutorial and plan to start using UTM.

This is a nice tutorial->  http://www.dbartlett.com/index.htm#intro

And for compass work here ->  http://www.learn-orienteering.org/old/

But yes, preloaded waypoints are still preferable to trying to go from GPSr
to map in the field. The less of that the better.
