Map Making Support / Re: GNIS Process problem
August 24, 2008, 04:17:14 AM
Actually I have seen the GNIS process worked at least once. I think there might be a cache problem when running it multiple times or using on different states.

Actually I found a log file in the GNIS folder:

C:\MAPS\ME\gnis\gnis.shp: shape (.shp) or index files (.shx) can not be opened, will just import attribute data.

I do know why this is happening

Yes I agree the GNIS process is broken. I only get gnis.dbf in my gnis folder.

I have not been able to work around this problem. I will contact Global Mapper soon about the issue. There is no need to let this thing run forever. On my machine I can process a quadrant (0.5 x 1.0) in less than 30 minutes. I have seen GM runs on some quadrants for more than 8 hours. My only work around is to use the FWTools to generate the missing quadrants. Actually FWTools works quite well.

I am having a lot of troubles with Global Mapper and Maine. There are 4 or 5 quadrants that I cannot generate. I think I am seeing 2 different bugs.  One is the "Unknown Error" and the other bug is an infinite loop that seems to consume all the virtual memory.

The tutorial is wrong. I think you have to install it as a 'service'.

Map Making Support / ME topo map
August 18, 2008, 05:01:54 AM
I am making progress on my Maine topo map but all the data files are too big to load in Global Mapper (ran out of memory). I could easily split the map North/South but what is the best way to do it? Should I overlap the two parts? Any other comments/tricks I could use.

I have seen those "Unknown error". It happens when you run out of memory(?). Try to reboot, unload everything you do not need (browser, mail, IM, etc.) and try again.

Yes I saw that but had already started the download of the Arcgrid files. I am using your program for the rest and will be using the tiff for the next state.

It is working but really slow. I only got 1 download so far (4 zip files). All my attempts result in 2 or 3 zip files and waiting for ever for the last one(s).

What is important is not the CPU power but the amount of memory available. Try to reboot your machine and do not start programs you do not need like email, web browser, skype, IM, etc. Just stop everything you can. This will free up virtual memory and those programs using very large dataset will run a lot better with much less thrashing.

Map Making Support / USGS server down?
August 14, 2008, 03:30:27 AM
It looks like the USGS server is down. I have been trying to download the elevation data for Maine, but now it returns an error for each URL I send. It worked OK a couple of days ago.

Yes I noticed that Connecticut and Rhodes Island are almost there. Maybe I will add them later. But now I want Maine.

Thanks for putting this site up.
