Using The Maps/Garmin Software / Re: massachusetts map questions

Make sure you have the right zoom setting to see what you want. It does include street name. I know the street in my neighborhood are on it.

Anyway there is now a more recent one at: http://www.gameandfishnetwork.com/News/article/sid=15.html

Using The Maps/Garmin Software / New England Topo map
« on: February 05, 2009, 06:50:35 PM »
I posted a new topo map for part of New England: Maine, Mass, Vermont, New Hampshire
Let me know what you think:    http://www.gameandfishnetwork.com/News/article/sid=15.html

Thank you. I will try it later this week-end.

The idea is to be able to restart the process in case it was interrupted. You could rename the xxxxxxxx.MP file to xxxxxxxx.MP_

It would be nice if the topo process could rename the MP files after the .img file has been generated. This would allow us to kill and restart the process.
This is by far the slowest and the most painful part of the entire process.

OK, thanks. I suppose I can put CT in since I already have most of the data on my computer.

Map Making Support / Multiple maps

I have now all the data for MA,ME,NH, and VT. I guess I will add RI to get all the New England states.
What is the best way to release these maps?

I could build a single map but that would create a huge file.

I can create multiple maps but what is the best way to do it so I can switch from one map to another on my GPS. Too bad our ancestors did not design straight lines for state borders!

I think the "Unknown error" might be a "not enough memory" type of error. I am now trying a different process:

- I am combining all the files except the elevation files to generate intermediate .MP files. This process seems to work OK. I have now generated the MP files where before I got my 'Unknown error'. So we know the "Unknown error" is not because of bizarre data in the GNIS/Transportation/etc files.

- When this is done I will combine the .MP files above with the elevation data to generate the final MP files.

This process will use less memory because when I bring in the elevation data (already split in smaller rectangles) I won't have in memory all the GNIS/Transportation/Water/etc files already loaded.

From what I can see, it looks like GM loads only the files it needs.

Stay tuned...

Map Making Support / Re: Vermont gnis file

Do you mean the gnis.prj file must be added 'by hand' to the GNI folder that I am building? I did not do that.

Yes it says Unknown. I am trying to see if I can find something. Talk about a needle in a hay stack!

My rectangles are numbered:

A1 .. A5
I1 .. I5

And I get an error on:

E1 E2 E3
F1 F2 F3

All the other rectangles appear to be ok.

Any ideas on what could cause that error? I am trying to build a combined map (MA/VT/NH) and I get those errors in the middle of the map. I am missing 4 or 5 rectangles. All the other MP files seem good.

In my gnis folder I end up with the .shp, .dbf, and .shx files

That did not help

Map Making Support / Vermont gnis file

I build the GNIS file for Vermont with the topo_process but when I try to load the gnis.shp file into GM I get:

Shape file does not contain projection information. Please select the projection/datum ...

Any idea?

Oops NH is missing elevation data in the Northern most quadrant! I will fix that and make a new map. In fact I am making now a combined map NH/VT/MA because I already have most of the data on my computer.
