Map Making Support / Topo maps Canada
April 28, 2013, 09:19:30 AM
I have been trying to figure out how/where to find some Canadian topo maps. I have been reading this forum and still can't make heads or tails of it. I did try a website found in this forum  http://www.geobase.ca/geobase/en/find.do?produit=cded  and found it easy to get to the area that I wish to make a map of. I down loaded a smal area, saved it, uncompressed it but still can't make Garmin Basecamp read it. I must be missing something, I thought I had it save in the correct format. Any suggestions???

General Discussion / Re: Goggle Earth questions
March 28, 2013, 05:10:16 AM
I have been playing with this and figured out whats going on I think. If I create a new picture and do the process it works fine. Once you turn the program off and reload it, the photos I have saved, if I try and load these, it down loads the photo as a internet short cut, must be trying to load as a world photo. I think this explains the 1 kb file size and then the buried 275 kb phot in it? I'm not that good on computers "language"

General Discussion / Goggle Earth questions
March 25, 2013, 06:23:50 PM
I have been reading/learning a lot from this forum topics THANKS
I have down loaded Goggle Earth and have played around with downloading photos onto a Garmin 62 into a Custom Map folder. I went onto Goggle Earth today and tried to do it again and get a message picture size is to big and will not load onto my GPS. When I look at the size of the HMZ file it shows only 1 kb. The current pictures I have on the GPS show 275-310 kb. Funny thing is when I look at the 1 kb file and right click and check the folder properties, show approx 300 kb +/-. I can't even load a picture that I have saved with the Goggle as a personal place.
Any ideas what I'm doing wrong??

GPSr Units / Re: Google maps

With the Birds Eye photos, how many different area maps can you make and keep? I would assume/hope that it all depends on the size of the MicroSD card and the level of quality of the photos. If I would get a 16 gb card I could put a corner of a state in a series of different maps areas and keep it even after the subscription expires?

I don't know what happened but after leaing it for a 1/2 and doing nothing, it started working.

I'm trying to load the Garmin Fishing the Midwest Mapping software I purchased yesterday. I loaded it, unlocked it per instructions, printed a confirmation that successful in unlocking program. But when  I open Garmin Basecamp it says the version I unlocked it still locked up. I try to unlock it again and I get a note that the unlock coded is already used or the version is unlocked.
After I did this I reliazed that I had not registered my GPS with Garmin and did so.
I have a cople unlockable maps (which I downloaded from this website and are great) and old version of Garmin Lake maps.
Any ideas of problems? I have to wait until Monday to call Garmin I suppose.
GREAT WEBSITE AND THANKS FOR THE INFO

GPSr Units / size of Micro sd card can use Garmin Map 62s
February 04, 2013, 06:06:47 PM
I was wondering what size micro sd card a person can use in a Garmin Map 62s. The owner manual says 4 gb. I have a 8 gb card in it now with no problems. Has anybody used anything bigger? I just use it for navigation uses.
THANKS

GPSr Units / Re: Google maps

Thanks for the replys, I understand that the custom maps are either on or off. I was wondering if anyone knew how to turn the custom maps on or off on a Garmin Map 62s. I think I'm not doing it correctly on the GPS itself. Is it possiable?
Thanks for the info..

GPSr Units / Google maps

I was wondering about using the downlaoded maps from google earth and downloading a custom map ( JPG image ) and having it as a tranparent layer onto the garmin map 62s. The files are saved in the Garmin  custom maps folder. On some of the gps , you can turn this custom map folder/layer on/off. Can you do this with a Map 62. The custom map shows on the map page no matter which map I have visiable. This is really neat to have but when out in the field it could be nice to be able to turn this feature off.

GPSr Units / Datum settings
January 12, 2013, 08:46:15 AM
I have a question on map datum settings. I have a older Garmin Map 76 that I have many saved waypoints from which I saved at the point itself. Not projecting it anyway from any mapping program. I was at the spot and saved a waypoint. I found out the datum setting was NAD 27 central.
I got a new Garmin Map 62 which I'm transfering the way points to and found I should be using WGS84.
My question is the map datum setting is only used for placing the waypoint on a map in the correct location. The Lat-Long saved on the GPS is the same and would take you back to the exact spot of the original way point minus the 5'-12' variation.
I use Garmin Mapsource/Basecamp with topo maps/ fishing hot spot lake maps to see where I was.
I wanted to use Mapsource to export my waypoints from the old GPS and import them onto the new GPS. Does the Datum setting matter for this use?

I'mnew to this website and was wondering how to get the 24 k topo for wisconsin and Minnesota. I now Garmin has these out but I need 2 disc/chips because the 2 states are on different "sets". I have loaded the Topos for each state but they appear to be 50K scale. I would like to put them on a Garmin Map78 which I'm going to purchase very shortly. I'm having a very hard time with the turtorials and don't want to wait my time for the 50 k scale. This is a very nice website and will explore it a little more. Any suggestions? THANKS
