Map Making Support / Re: Aerial images
June 28, 2022, 09:30:15 AM
My bad on my math.  It should be 400gb not 4tb.  Each region I've made has a folder and within are the hgt files for dem and mp for contours.  Say it's 20 gb uncompressed, zipping in 7zip format, set to ultra it will end up about 12% of the folder.  I delete a folder when not needed and decompress the archive when needed.

To the OP, I don't have numbers to back it up, but leading up to and beginning to make maps for garmin devices I concluded that there aren't that many people making them, though the small community is dedicated.  It is dispersed over place and time with free software, depreciated or no longer available software mixed in with paid.  You have asked about aerial images and some suggestions have been made where to locate them.  When I first began making maps there wasn't or really isn't a one stop shop and I had to figure a lot out by testing and trial and error, for my purposes, and I'm glad I did.  Good luck.

Map Making Support / Re: Aerial images

Neither of my handheld garmins will display a photorealistic 3d, though they will show the 2d version, whatever is in the map and the kmz image that was overlaid show up.  Orux maps will show 3d, not natively though.  The gmapsupp, even if shading is in the img, will not show up.  One has to copy to the DEM folder in orux the .hgt file(s) and point orux to where that folder  is at.  One then may have to adjust the altitude scale to avoid overly pointy or flat terrain.  The zoom and tilt work well, but text and trail, roads gets distorted somewhat, it looks fairly close to the basecamp version though.  It's fun to make and can be useful, but one has to accept some limitations.

When not currently used I 7zip my contour and dem files and it's about 40gb or = 4 Tb unzipped.  Any map the has images or terrain has a storage tax.  This would be difficult if not impossible for mortals 15-20 years ago.  With this app you have created, are there any sd cards of that size to hold 600gb?

The screenshot or "snipping" was in basecamp, then I cropped a little more with an image editing software.  In 2018 or so the MKGMAP folks figured out how to "merge" the SRTM data (.hgt files in this case) in the compiler as an option, in the simplest term.  For shading and basic 3D the 3" are fine for basecamp and gps and they are 2.75mb for each tile vs 25mb for the 1".  My US-WestTopo uses about 440 2.75mb tiles, the 1" would make the map way to big and strain my hard drive capacity from all the other maps!

Map Making Support / Re: Aerial images

Awhile back I was messing around and the end result I snipped out, the ingredients:

-Map in basecamp, in this case I had made a custom map of one grid of lat/long
-I used http://www.sasgis.org/sasplaneta/  In this case I believe I used an ESRI image and exported to kmz format
-Import in basecmap and played around with transparency and detail settings
-I don't remember which I did first but I sent to gps (orux, old etrex and newer etrex)

The end result was "passable" for my purposes, but I haven't put any more effort in this.  This image is of the Eagle Cap Wilderness in NE Oregon.  I've been doing some side stuff in relief shading and have used use sas, there are also a couple of plug ins for qgis that allow you to add layers from various aerial imagery sources and then save/export to other formats

For some reason I'm unable to attach a photo today....anyway

It look like the map is missing a typ file.  I can see shading coming through.  I removed temporarily the typ from my map and it looked close to what you are showing.  Those lines look to areas where a First Nation, Forest and other public lands should be displayed.  Who did you get this map from and how did you install it?  Most if not all of the current map makers include a typ as the maps looks better than a "generic" look.  Look around in the folder that you download and see if you find a typ file (it will be 10-100kb most likely).  There are a couple free tools that can install the typ properly.

I spoke too soon in the previous post and used bad math.  The CA-Territories Topo and routable versions together will be uploaded.

I have recently uploaded updated maps for the Canadian Territories and the West, Central and East Provinces withe recent Open Street Map Data.

I recently inherited an older Garmin Nuvi from a family member who passed away.  In the past I haven't been that interested in routable maps but in tracking where I am now with the GPS.  I had to tweak style files and mkgmap options and remove the contours to make a routable map for the area I live and comparing to the City Nav which was already on the SD Card the results were not perfect but really good in the testing I did.

In order to stay under the 2 GB limit here for uploads  I had to leave out a routable map for the Territories, for now.  The other map sets all were under 2 GB.  So I as mention in the map comment area each zip archive has two map sets, one with topo/dem and the other routable/more poi's, for the exact same area...two for the price on one.  I'm not certain yet if I will do this two map thing for the rest of North America in the next update, but will see.

Take Care

Hi Z,
I appreciate your compliment.

If I'm reading the question right there is a typo, "want" instead of  (won't) download the MAC/gmapi/gmap version of the US-SouthEastTopo.  I just downloaded, unzipped and copied the .gmap to programdata/garmin/maps and all is well on viewing in basecamp on my end.  Not sure what issue is occuring.  Post back if things still aren't working for you.

@mhinch

Just a thought but why not just submit your map and info as a "new" map, just a little copy and pasting and see if you can submit.

I have recently updated and uploaded maps for Alaska and Hawaii.  In the case of Alaska, the previous version may have had too little data.  The current data had more features included but I still had to manually add some features.  I also had to do some additional processing on some of the state so that the maps looks right in basecamp and on gps.

In the case of some of the maps I've made the raw data is from mid 2020 or earlier.  In the near future as time allows I intend to upload the maps of the rest of North America with recent/current data.  I would not expect big changes but changes in the data vary locally and globally so YMMV.

Cheers.

When I decided to offer maps I initially just had the maps maps in gmapi format, I soon decided to offer the img format as well.  Here and elsewhere some offered one or the other or both.  I opted for both to give the uses the most options with the least effort.  The gmapi/gmap is the "new" format and can be used in both mac and windows basecamp and the old mapsource as well on windows.  On the map download page the windows version = device and the mac version = windows and mac basecamp.  The good thing about basecamp you can select all or a smaller area to install to your gps.

As far as the Ibycus, this where we were before:
Disk formated in fat32 - check
Folder named Garmin (a must)
.img files in the garmin folder, on older devices they are limited to one map no large the 4 gb and must be named gmapsupp newer device can use names like CA-CentralProvTopo so... copy the the Ibycus gmapsupp.img file to your SD card in the folder named Garmin, powercycle, enable, done.  If this isn't working something else is going on.

I checked a couple of things earlier.  While we need to look at all possibilities I think it may be something else, the Family ID is not shared with any "official" Garmin made map and the tile segments are 741 for the map in question.  Our friend says this is a new gps and it sounds like no other maps are on it except those that come with the unit.  We can let Angus0914 tell us for sure when they post again but they may be new to the gpsing not just a new device.  If one looks around here or any other site that deals with maps and gps, getting maps to the device has always been an issue and probably always will, with us helping navigate to a solution.

I was thinking something else in regards to the internal/external...

Lets try something else.  If you don't already, install Garmin Basecamp.  If you have a mac you need Basecamp and I believe map install as well, a seperate download.  Now download the "Mac" version of CA-CentralProvTopo.  Unzip and you should be left with a folder ending in .gmapi  If you have windows click to open that folder,  keep opening until you see several files and folders including product1 and a couple of others.  Back up one level and you should see CA-CentralProvTopo.gmap (no i) folder.  Copy this folder to C:\ProgramData\Garmin\Maps  you might need to unhide and create those folders, as they are spelled.  If it is a mac, word on the street is that after unzipping you will be left with an icon, if basecamp and mapinstall are installed correctly, click that an it should install the map.  Regardless if it is mac or win when you open basecamp you should see  CA-CentralProvTopo in the maps drop down menu, now click it and let the tiles load.

At this point plug in your Montana.  Give it a minute, then towards the bottom of the map menu you should see install maps, open that and your gps should show, highlight your map, click continue, select as few or as many tiles as you'd line and follow the prompts to send the map to your gps if everything is going right it may take 5-10 minutes to install the map.  After it is done, power cycle gps, enable CA-Prov and hopefully open on your gps.

There are other threads on here, old and more recent with the same issue you are having, heck I had it before.  There are similar and unique reasons for problems, but we will figure it out.  Having a gps and getting maps to it requires some patience.

Report back with a progress report
