I am extracting the hiking trails data from USGS 2016 Topo PDF maps for an area in Colorado using QGIS.  The extracted information is then saved as a KML.  The KML file contains a series of short lines, with numbers for names, that make up the dashed trails on the map.

In Basecamp, one can manually join these into a long string for individual trials, but the process is slow and tedious.  The difficulty has several reasons including inconsistent numbering of the segment names and Basecamp's not recognising the numeric order. (ex. 2101 shows between 210 and 211)

I have used the IMGfromGPX program to convert a GPX of the data into a map that shows the dashed lines.  It works OK but each dash has a name displayed, making for an unusably cluttered map.

My goal is have trail linestrings for a Garmin map on my 62ST.

Ideally, I would like to have a shapefile, GPX or KML of the trail linestrings and be done with it.  The US Forest Service has a shapefile with trails from the Western US but it does not include Colorado and other areas, like Texas.

Short of that, I am looking for suggestions on how to speed up the process, of making a GPX for the map.

I installed the latest Arizona Topo in Basecamp in anticipation of a trip in a few weeks.  When viewing the trails there appears to be multiple tracks for the trails, some of which are offset by some distance (about 0.13 miles) compared to the GPS tracks from hikearizona.com (the grey lines) and the other trails on the map.

Can someone give me some guidence on how best to read this map.  My intention was to point others in our group with GPSrs to this map as a guide for our hike, but many of them would be confused by the multiple paths shown. So I feel it can be used for this purpose.

New to the forum and I am glad to find this place.

I am working on making maps for an upcoming trip to the Smoky Mountains.  I have the tracks for the hikes and many side trails.  The GEOPDF files of the latest USGS TOPO series have been converted into KML files.  What I would like to do is overlay the track data into the jpeg image when making the KML so I see all the tracks without having to have them loaded and turned on in my GPSMAP 62S.  I know it can be done with screen captures from Google Earth, but wow, what a pain.  I also tried doing a manual overlay in GIMP, but wow, what a pain.

I know this can be easily done using GPS Visualizer for older topo maps, but I prefer the newer less cluttered and non-shaded format on my GPS.

Does anyone have some guidance on an automated way of accomplishing overlaying tracks on a jpeg image?
