Using The Maps/Garmin Software / Re: nuvi 500
July 11, 2013, 06:47:22 PM
Mike, I think you are referring to my map http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/view/500/

The one Boyd linked to is very old.

My map works great on the 500 and will overlay the Topo maps you can get on this site.

General Discussion / Re: Google Maps supports KMZ

I've only got one thing to say.  2 + 2 = 4.  That's my contribution to this intriguing thread.

I use Inno and have attached one of my scripts.  I allow the user to use the default install location or choose their own.  I also give them the option to install the original GPS tracks in case they want to view them in Google Earth.  I also give them the option to install some Word documents that explain how to get Mapsource, Basecamp, and how to load onto your GPSr.  Also included is how to get tracks off of a Nuvi and some settings changes to make to a Nuvi for off road use.  I make ATV Trail maps which are quite different than what of the guys on this site make.  I have a basic script that I just use "find and replace" to use if for a different map.  The script has some extra lines for installing the optional files and documents.

By the way I have never heard of anyone having trouble with the Window 7 issue of not recognizing the map.

When I have GPS tracks that I look at on GE I notice that GE sometimes has different names for small roads than the Garmin Topo's are the Topo's on here.  Does GE get it's road data from other sources.  I'm talking about out in the Boonies.

General Discussion / Online Users Names
February 05, 2013, 01:22:17 PM
Just curious but when ever I look at the names at the bottom of users online the names appear to be just a bunch of letters and not real names.  I don't mean to insult anyone if those are real names but I cannot believe they are.
My question is: are those real names and if not what are they.

Below is what I see:
BobT, Vgqecclw, erucagkii, vqstaq0by, WaindySaidwaY, Fignipiepe, nlgcqnhv, Kgimxjwg, IrrarDed, nadvqncp, lovkoser, sjibicl, smolisalaDaph, glaramn, Odpcfqku, svadity, ilollistin, liresnoit, bogaard, Qiglpypm, apyvoi9tc, dxymkcj, Ilavlaml, blorieffide, fffzriwy, arobrellia, idxelqwd, Invorie, chkkflbl, apeteevy, inraehanla, Sdjmsxfd, soycle, Huuwwgbb, sufphn7cv, Urhdtxeq

Rubicon, the latest and most complete of the ATV trails in WV is the one linked below, the one in a previous post is very old and outdated.

I had a similar thing happen to two Colorado's I had.  I use mine on an ATV.  The USB connector in the Colorado is not secured very well.  My first one quit communicating after about a year.  It turned out that the USB connector was very loose in the housing, I think this came from the USB cable just dangling and bouncing around.  I sent it back with $99 and they sent me a brand new one.  One year later the same thing started happening, as it was getting loose I tried to seal it in with epoxy but it was too late.  I would run on batteries and it was very iffy if I could communicate to download tracks.  I took Boyd's advice and upgraded to the Montana with no regrets.  I did read on advrider.com (they have a 400 page thread on the Montana) that you should get the rugged power cradle and not use the 12V power cord or you will be replacing because of the same problem the Colorado has.  The Montana's USB connector is much more solid than the Colorado but I think they will all fail with the powercord bouncing around as it does on an ATV, motorcycle, or sled.

General Discussion / Re: Mapping out the new year
January 06, 2013, 06:43:42 AM
The Android App "OruxMaps" is the only app that I know of that you can load a Garmin .img file on and it will display it.  I have it on my phone and friends have it on their tablets.  It shows the maps that I make, ATV Trails, very well.  It does not show track colors but shows track types.  I am not sure how well it would show one of the big more complex maps that most of the members on this site make.

GPSr Units / Re: Nuvi for offroad use
December 09, 2012, 01:59:03 PM
Adrian, a lot of guys I ride with use Nuvi's, but for limited purposes.  As Boyd said, you cannot install tracks on them, only maps.  They do track and you can get your tracks off of them.  I am not sure how accurate the gps chip is.

None of them are power users and only use them because they can load the maps I make onto them.  Some of them have the Topo's from this site for Utah, CO, and WV but never use them since they make the screen too dark with all of the topo lines and shading.  They only run with my maps turned on.

My friends are all migrating to the new larger screens since when ATVing the larger the screen the better for when you are moving and bouncing around.

Knowing that you are a power user you will not like it better than your 60 for logging new tracks (for the rest of you Adrian and I know each other).

Pros
Large screen.
Can use it in the car.
Inexpensive.

Cons
User does not have many display options (turn shading off, level control  etc)
Can't load tracks.
Need custom maps for it to be affective for ATV riding.

I got a Montana 6 months ago and it is fantastic.  Since I got mine several other members of my club have also gotten them.  I got the basic 600 for around $440, not cheap but awesome.

Map Making Support / Re: Map background color
November 16, 2012, 06:09:09 PM
Popej, thanks.  I cut and pasted your post into my type file and it worked perfectly.  Maps now have a pure white background that does not print.

This is a great site with so many knowledgeable, helpful people.

Map Making Support / Re: Map background color
November 15, 2012, 03:20:03 PM
I have never used polygons before.  I use a .txt file and convert it to .typ file in MSTK.  Is the format below what I would add to my .txt file?  The maps that I make are maps of GPS tracks.
Also, how do I make the polygon on the map, I assume I have to draw a big rectangle in GpsMapEdit the size of my map and select is as a 0x4B.

Thanks for all of your help.

;White Background
[_polygon]
Type=0x4B
xpm="32 32 1 1"
"! c #ffffff" ; Daytime background
"4 c #ffffff" ; Nighttime background

Map Making Support / Map background color
November 15, 2012, 08:28:15 AM
When I try to print the maps I have made they always have a light cream colored background which also prints.  I am using BaseCamp to print, I have tried personal printer and large plotter with the same result.  It takes forever and uses a lot of ink.  Is there a way to get the background to be pure white and not print.  I use the free cgpsmapper and MSTK.  I have tried using both transparency options with no difference.  When I look at some of the TOPO maps on here they also seem to have this light cream background.

General Discussion / Re: where am i going wrong?
November 07, 2012, 07:36:16 AM
Another good option that I use a lot is drawing the track/trail you want in Google Earth.  This obiously depends on how good GE is for the area you are interested in.  If it is densly foliated it doesn't work well.

This App works great on the type of maps that I make which are just maps of tracks and don't have a lot of other topo lines,  etc.
