The maps on this website are specific to Garmin. I am not sure you will be able to use them on your navigon as most likely it uses a different map format than garmin. The maps here will however work on most garmin units.

For my Nuvi, I used to just rename the existing POI file as something else e.g. poi.gpi -> FirstSet.gpi. Nuvi would then all you to have multiple categories. The name of the categories would be FirstSet or whatever file name I picked.

Well, to load the map, you need to run the installer that you downloaded and install the map in mapsource first. Then you can use "Transfer" from the mapsource menu to transfer map to your GPS. After that you will done of course.

General Discussion / Re: using img files

Quotehow does one turn an OpenStreet map into something "searchable / routable"? or is that possible?

The million dollar question. That my friend is not possible. You can create maps that are searchable/routable but once the map has been created, with the current understanding and tools, it is not possible to  make an already available map searchable routable. Additionally, the reason we don't have searchable/routable maps is that cgpsmapper (the tool used to create searchable/routable version of maps) costs an arm and a leg for the routable version. It is about $2800... vs the free version used to create the majority of maps here.

Well, you can take ownership of the file and then replace it, but if it is a windows file and you replace it with a non-windows file,  you might end up in a situation where Vista will claim that "You have made an unauthorized change to your computer..."

Anyways, to change the ownership, open my computer and navigate to c:\windows\system32. Right click on the file you want to replace, select properties. Click on the security tab and then click on the Advanced button. In the new windows that pops up, click on the owner tab. It will list that the current owner is "TrustedInstaller." Click on the "Edit" button below. Another window will show up which will look similar to the previous one. It will list Current Owner: Trusted Installer. From the "Change owner to: " box, select administrators and click Apply. Click OK, to close this window and keep clicking OK until all the windows are closed.

Again, right click the file and select properties. Click the Security tab. Select Administrators from the "Group or user names" list and click "Edit". In the window that comes up, select administrators and then in the "Allow" list in  "Permissions for Administrators" check the "Full Control" checkbox.

That should hopefully do it. Just be cautious that if you change a file owned by "TrustedInstaller", your windows installation might run into issues with "You have made an unauthorized change to windows..."

Map Making Support / Re: Oregon State Group Project

I don't know what happened. Krellor just hasn't been seen here in a while. However, the oregon state is available as part of the NorthWest topo that John released here. It is pretty good with 20ft contours etc etc.:

Oz, is there a step by step guide on how I can manually create the oceans file. Or better yet, is there a source from which I can get the ocean file? John, how do I go about getting the data from you so I can additionally help out? I have now enough space and computing power and the right cgpsmapper version to do the processing?

First, John, you are My HERO and I do not say this lightly. Even from the size of the map, one can see that this is almost twice the size of the previously published chunks (SE, SC or even SW USA) which shows how difficult it was to create this entire section.

Now something interesting that I noted in the NW Topo maps. In the top corner, it does not show the ocean in blue color, the ocean is shown the same color as land although shorelines and contours are just fine. Additionally, the columbia river at the intersection of I-90 vanishes at the dam although the contours are there. It then reappears at the other dam. I guess there is not much water in the area between two dams? Addtionally, the puget sound ocean to the left of seattle again does not show in blue color and instead shows up the color of land. The issue is interesting because these exact problems are present in even the WA topo map that I created. Makes me think that either USGS data itself has problems there or the tools we are using screw up on these areas.

Either ways, Thanks a lot!!

Edit the registry file i.e. the '.reg' file from the directory where maptoolkitset created the preview files and make sure that the mapid in the reg file matches what you put in the nsi file. Registry files are just text files with a .reg extension, so you can open it in the notepad. If it does not match, edit the reg file to fix the issue and then try again. That should solve the problem.

On Vista:

Click on Start
In the little search box in the start menu, type "compmgmt.msc"

A window by the name "Computer Management" comes up.
There is a pane on the left, where the top node is called "Computer management', expand it, go to "Local users and groups", expand that and then click on "users", this will bring the list of "users" in the right pane. You should see the "postgres" user in this list. Right click on the postgres user and it will show option for "setting a password". Additionally, from this menu, you can delete the user as well.

I believe you need to save the ocx files to c:\windows\system32

If you delete the Garmin Registry Key Hive (looks like folder), and you have multiple maps installed, you will need to reinstall _all_ of your maps as none of them will function after that.

The Garmin folder contains information about all your maps. It is better to delete only the offending ones, rather than everything.

Be careful when installing maps. Follow all the instructions. I guess at this point  all you want is to get Mapsource working again. To do this, you need to undo the registry changes from the Montana map. You can do this manually by deleting the registry hive:

"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Garmin\MapSource\Families\MT Landowner Topo"

Alternately, you can install the registry key I am providing here (basically, just save the key to your computer and double click it)  and it will hopefully restore your Mapsource to its previous state.

Map Making Support / Re: downloading multiple maps ?
February 25, 2009, 09:39:09 AM
Well, to install multiple maps on your GPS device, you have to do the following:

Run Mapsource and then:

1.  In the top left corner, from the drop down selection of maps, select the first map  you want to transfer.
2. Select the area selector tool in the menu
3. Using the area selection tool on the toolbar on the top, select the sections of the map you want to transfer on your GPS. Mapsource has a column on the left side, which on the top contains 4 tabs (waypoints, tracks, maps...).
4. If you click on the "Maps" tab, you will see all the sections that you selected, appear there.
5. Verify all the maps you selected appear in the list
6. Now go back to step , i.e. from the drop down, select the second map  you want to transfer. After, the second map shows up in the map window, repeat step 2.
7. Repeat steps 2-5 for all the maps that you want to transfer. Once you have selected _all_ the maps you wanted to transfer, from the Menu, select Transfer->transfer to device and Mapsource will send all the maps to your device.

Remember, you have to select _ALL_ the maps that you want to send to your GPS _every_ time as the previous maps get overwritten every time you transfer new maps.
