Here's some information for anyone potentially using Mapwel with a Garmin 66s.

I have Mapwel 2017 build 17.0 and a Garmin 66s.

In Mapwel I created a transparent map using my tracks.  I used File > Upload map to GPS.  In the upload dialog I checked the box to Add to existing maps.  That worked.  Later I decided that I did not want the two maps combined on the GPS.

I then used Tools > Erase Specific maps to remove the one I'd created in Mapwel.  That seemed to work.  But after that the GPS would not start.  It would initiate the startup process but then within a few seconds shut down.  The same thing happened when I tried to connect it to my PC.
 
My guess is that the 66s did not like something about the way Mapeel modified the gmapsupp.img file and refused to start.

Garmin support spent about an hour with me trying to get the GPS to function.  They ended up saying that I needed to return it for repair/exchange. 

I was transferring some map segments from the Washington 24K Topo Map which is downloadable from this site.  The Windows download file name is "95-4065-watopo_install.exe".  I notice that at the latitude of Mt Rainier that there seems to be a band of 'duplicate' slightly offset map segments.  These have map names of the form "WATopo_A2".  Other map segments in the mapset have names of the form "Washington 24k Topo – 40ft_E2". 

Trying to select map segments in MapSource for transfer to the GPS without getting any of these duplicate segments can be a little tricky.  I mention this, in case the map author would like to fix it.

I like to crop vector data to an irregular shape (area) such as cropping roads to a National Forest boundary.  Has anyone found an automated way to do it? Global Mapper does not.

I'm having problems with custom typing points.  When I try to open MapSource I get a message that there is a problem with this GARMIN application...please e-mail Garmin;  then MapSource closes.

MapSource is version 6.13.7
cGPSmapper: I've tried 96 and 98c free version
Using MapsetToolkit v1.62 beta.

The problem custom type is:

Hi,

I downloaded the Washington quad excel spreadsheet and found that the NORTH, WEST, EAST, SOUTH coordinates were listed as the same for all quads.

I'm looking for United States land cover data (wooded, etc.) in vector format.

National Map Seamless Server has National Atlas land cover data listed but when I've tried to download it the only format available appears to be GeoTiff.

I either get "Extracting data...Please wait for the data to be returned"...forever; or I get an error message after clicking the download button.

National Atlas has the land cover data available by state as a Geotiff with the value of each pixel representing a land cover type.  I've been able to download from there, but have not found a way to turn the Geotiff into a vector format file that can be used for Garmin map making.

So I'm looking for either a source of the data already in vector format or a way to convert the Geotiff.

Forest Service data

The FSGeodata Clearinghouse is a pretty good source for Forest Service data.  Individual National Forests may also have GIS data available from their web sites.

Select Vector Data Gateway

Here is the procedure I use:
From tabs at top of screen select Zoom to Location > select Forest (NF) > select the NF of interest > press Submit.  It will load an over view map of that NF.
The indented instructions are probably not needed, can likely go directly to download tab.
   Click on the Layers/Legend tab on the right > click the Layers tab.
   Click on the right arrow next to the Base Map Data to see layers available.
   Clicking on a layer listing will turn it on or off.
   Click refresh.
   May need to zoom in to see some data layers.
Click the Download tab at the top > click Extract Layers.
Click the Extract Location tab.  Select the Download radio button.
Click I have read the disclaimer...important detail.
Click on the right arrow next to the Base Map Data to see layers available.  Turn on desired layers by clicking on them.
Click the left Select Item drop box to select a NF, then select the forest from the right drop box.
Click Submit.
It will display: Extracting Layers and Display a File Download dialog to download the zipped file. 
The Extracting layers can take a few minutes.

When the file is unzipped this will create a .shp, .shx, and .dbf for each layer

If you happen to get duplicate subbasins in your NHD shapefiles how is that handled?
