Using The Maps/Garmin Software / Custom waypoints
March 10, 2018, 08:57:02 PM
Hello, Back in 2013, I made myself some custom waypoints.  Nothing fancy (used in deer hunting....some water, some blood-looking drops, some silly circle with an orange X through it...stuff like that)  I used these in MapSource and can see them now as waypoints when I bring up those old files.  I have the same GPS unit (trusty 60csx) and the only thing different is my map is now 2018.1 instead of 2013.2.  However that may be, I can still see them in my Map Source if I elect to change the symbol.

I cannot for the life of me remember where I got those symbols into either MapSource or my unit.  I'm pretty sure I learned that technique here as I really go no other places for anything related to my Garmin stuff.

Can you point me in a direction to edit my waypoint symbols?

Thank you!!!!

GPSr Units / Etrex 30x question
January 31, 2018, 10:02:12 AM
Hello,
My son has a etrex 30x and is wondering if his track data can be saved to the SD card like on my old 60csx to be later read with BaseCamp and MapSource.  Can you advise?  Thank you.

Yes, I am still using my 60csx for my long distance motorcycle challenges all over the USA!  I love that unit!  Probably why I owe three!  :-)

GPSr Units / Track Properties and MPH
May 26, 2016, 08:52:34 PM
Been awhile since I been here....

If I recall correctly, Mapsource used to show me the MPH in the track properties box after double-clicking a recorded track.  That information is no longer showing in the track properties window.  Only shows location, leg length, and leg time.  I know it used to because I could tell on what stretch of road I went a certain speed......

Is there a setting I have unchecked either in MS or on my unit?

Thanks so much!

Mike

Mapsource version 6.16.3
Unit is a beautiful.....60csx that I use every single day.

Howdy,

Is there a setting somewhere to make the waypoints jive between Mapsource and Google Earth?  Mapsource set to NAD27 CONUS.

I just ckecked this with BaseCamp and it was pretty much dead on.  I am certain I don't have loaded the current version of Base Camp either.  I like Mapsource over Base Camp for what I do and was wondering if I could make it more accurate with some setting.

Thanks

I make a new track in Map Source, send it to Dakota 20, and it does not appear on my map.  I see it in the list, Show On Map is enabled.

Any insight just before deer hunting?

EDit:  I have done this before with other Dakota 20's at deer camp (made the hunting boundary as a track, then uploaded it to their unit and it worked fine.  With this man's Dakota 20, it is not working.  Not real familiar with the Dakota 20, but always want to help others.

Again, any input would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

GPSr Units / Difference between Oregon 450 and 450t
December 30, 2011, 06:55:55 PM
Asking for good old "Uncle Jim" from our deer camp.  He would like something new and I suggested the Oregon 450 or 450t.  He has a very old Garmin 78 (I think) and it gets him lost every year.  He is somewhat GPSr knowledgeable and understands how the buttons and pages work.

What are the major differences between the Oregon 450 and 450t?

Thanks.

Mike (for dear old Uncle Jim)

Several people at deer camp have topo maps on their GPSr's.  I was the only one who had one of yours.  Absolutely the very best!  Thanks to everyone who make these maps available!

GPSr Units / Field report on my 60CSX
November 20, 2010, 08:11:41 PM
Just like you have stated several times on this forum, this unit performs and performs well.  I used it in the thick forests of mid Michigan during hunting season and it never failed to do whatever I asked it to do.  My tracks were dead on each day.  It never lost a signal.  The batteries lasted for a week (longest I was there) and it was user friendly and simple to use.  Coupled with your fantastic Michigan Topo map, it was dead on in elevations, trails, streams, and roads.

To those who do the work here, thank you!

When sending the map file to my 60csx, do I always have to send it to my micro card (either in the device or from a reader?)  I thought once I saw I could put it anywhere on my system (the pull down window offered all my hard drives.)

Did I dream this?

So, I got to thinking, do I really need all the 50 states loaded on my SD card when using my 60csx?  I really just hang in Michigan and Ohio for most of my daily existence.  I mean, I really don't think I'll be hunting elk in Montana or Grizzly bear in Alaska within the next two lifetimes.  Do you think that having less data to read, the 60csx will refresh faster?

When you're up all night, ya think of these things.  Don't ya?

GPSr Units / Available space remaining on a Nuvi 1300
October 17, 2010, 04:34:48 PM
Son in law is wondering if there is enough space on his new Nuvi 1300 for both City Navigator 2011.1 and City Navigator 2011.2 AND Topo 100k......PLUS your wonderfully made topo maps.

How does he see if there is enough space?  Will one CN overwrite the other?  He is thinking of opening up Map Source to CN 2011.2, selecting map sets of what's available, then sending to his Nuvi.  Same procedure for the other maps listed.

Thanks muchly (from son in law......and me.)

Regarding the usage of the 60csx, other than using more memory, are there advantages in generating more track points or less track points?  What are these used for in a practical situation?

Thanks.

Might sound like a silly question, but what the heck.....

How do you folks who use the 60csx while in the wilderness, carry the unit on your person?  There must be some who carry it on them....I would think.  I'm a hunter and thinking about using a lanyard around my neck and inside my coat.  Then snag a carabiner through the loopy thing that came with my device.

Or do you clip it to your coats?  If you use a lanyard, where do you attach the device so it doesn't bobble around while you're sneaking through the forests in search of whatever?

Been a long day so thanks for listening.

Mike

EDIT:  So......that's a BELT CLIP that came with it, huh?  Who'd a thought such a thing?

GPSr Units / Area of display at each zoom setting
September 29, 2010, 06:54:04 PM
Dumb title, but it's all I could come up with....

When my 60csx is zoomed to 5 miles, does that mean the distance from the left side of my screen to the right side of my screen equals that 5 miles?  Does it also mean the distance from the top of my screen to the bottom of my screen equals that same 5 miles?

Just kinda wondering.  It would be super if this worked out at the 80 foot setting....

GPSr Units / Route Names for 60CSx
August 22, 2010, 06:50:59 PM
Apparently, there is a limit to the number of characters one may use in a route name???  Or is this a setting somewhere that can be altered?

Thanks.

I know you folks are mostly handheld folks, but you are also the best source on the net for info on GPSr's.

My SIL's Nuvi 1300 shows the user-generated way points on his device.  If I Receive from Device in Map Source, they show up.  Now, I make a new MS session, make a new way point, then send it to the Nuvi, it does show up on his device as being added to his existing way points.  That's all well and good.  However, if I now Receive from device, the new way point is not visible in Map Source.  Got any ideas why not?

Thanks
Mike ...... for someone else.

GPSr Units / Nuvi 1300 Portable
July 06, 2010, 09:33:46 AM
My Son-in-law is getting the GPSr but and wants to know if this Nuvi 1300 Portable is a good one.  He will only use it in his car or truck.

He is concerned about the word Portable as he just wants to use it in his car.

Thanks.

General Discussion / Lost of signal occurances?
June 26, 2010, 05:40:52 AM
I was wondering if anyone has had a major issue with their modern GPSr's losing a signal.  Lately, a couple friends mentioned their loss while hunting.  I have never lost a signal while hunting or any other time so I'm hoping I'm in the majority.

Just wondering....

GPSr Units / 12-volt adaptor for the 60CSx
June 10, 2010, 05:06:54 PM
My buddy has a 12-volt adapter for his 60CSx that hooks to the serial pin "thingy."  I use the USB port when I'm in the truck.  Which is better for the device?

Is there some better setting for the track log in the 60csx?  I made about a 20 mile trek around my town (stopped here, stopped there, turned it off, turned it on, etc) and there were several track logs with 0 feet recorded and several with small distances.  I have it set to Auto.  Should it be set to Time or Distance?

Thanks for your help!
