General Discussion / Re: Any recommendations?

I have a 2797LM, 7" screen (diagonal). Love it! Much better than using a cellphone and squinting at a small screen.

GPSr Units / Garmin InReach SE
June 24, 2017, 06:36:14 AM
I just caught a video on YouTube for the Delorme InReach replacement.
Dissapointing. I was hoping Garmin would have a unit that was GPS _and_ Iridium in one. Pity. I'd buy one if it was GPS, GLONAS, and Iridium with a nice sized (5"?) screen. That size chassis would also give room for a decent battery and all-weather sealing. Maybe next time.

My Trails Install 53 sounds like the installer for that application "My Trails".  That won't do what you want. You need the topo as a file and the file converter to open/convert the file and install it on your Garmin.

General Discussion / Basecamp 462 won't install.
November 22, 2016, 03:43:13 PM
Looking for some help. New laptop (early Xmas present) has Windows 8.1 (ugh) with the "Metro" GUI (ugh x2). Trying to install Basecamp. The download package is 462 and it hiccups on the .net install.
Am I selecting the wrong package? The description says it's good for Vista thru current Windows versions.
Something is not right.

Get and learn an up dated app for the tablet you choose.

I have Gaia, Back Country Navigator, OsmAnd and PDGMaps on my Android phone, Galaxy Note3, a Garmin for the cars and 2 Garmin GPSMaps for backbacking.
To my mind none of them is "the" solution tho the Garmin for the cars comes closest.

GPSr Units / Turn off Alarm
December 20, 2015, 04:39:13 AM
Picked up a Garmin GPS MAP 64S, refurbished unit. It has an alarm setting that has re-occured twice at midnight (!) but after the first time I thought I had erased the setting.
Funny thing is the alarm started after I put the Receiver in a clamshell case. Surely the case has nothing to do with the alarm?
I suppose I could do a factory reset (?) to clear all alarms but that erases everything and seems like over - kill.
I used Main Menu - Alarm - Turn Off, then Main Menu - Alarm - (reset to 00:00 AM) and moved the 64 to a soft case, just on General Principals. Any other settings I need to look at?

I have been wrestling with much the same issue. SD size. I never thought it would be so difficult to find the small ones, 64s are all over the place. I did stumble across a 16, in a grocery store!

Looked at those 2. Pata toes,  pa tah toes. Now show me a new chassis with bigger screen and update the firmware ... that's new.

For some reason Taptalk and this forum stopped well together. I had to sign out and sign back in.
Anyway - I'm guessing, but strongly believe, that Garmin is not putting any more $ or effort into the personal GPSr market. The profit volume just isn't there. Would be nice if they'd release an Android app that I can use. The equivalent of a GPSMAP 64S on a phablet screen would be nice, Gaia is about as close as I can get. If wishes were fishes I suppose ...

GPSr Units / Wither Garmin

I'm wondering if Garmin will bring out anything new for the Handheld market segment. Lots of room for improvement on their part but the only thing I've seen, the eTrek35, strikes me as being more of a place holder than a new unit.

Any thoughts?

General Discussion / Re: Garmin eTrax20x
September 23, 2015, 12:16:26 PM
I have the Garmin 62ST. If your looking for practical advice I offer this.
Take your eTrax for a walk -  multiple times (the distance doesn't matter) - and practice going thru the menus until you're at least 1/2 way comfortable with its use.
The GPS language, the terms and usage is strange to the uninitiated plus the arrangement of Garmin's menu is hardly intuitive.
Believe me it will pay you to know how to start and stop a track. And how to store it and how to call it up. Do that now, before you need to depend on your Garmin, not out on a multi day trip.☺

Hmm I don't know. I think if the tablet has a receiver built-in it would be listed but I don't see it.
Googling external USB GPS Receivers next.
