Washington. One other thing I noticed is that when you process the transport data in map edit, one checks from field then you do not have the MP_type option as I did when I manually did everything. What would be the field to select then?

Just thought I would let you know. Using the previous version when running the transportation it ran all counties in the state. The new version only ran 1 county, I did it several times and the same results.

Duh! I admit in the 2 years since I got into these handhelds I had only opened map source 1 other time. Usually I use another map program to see where I have been but missing this was a real brain fart. Know to just figure the correct methods to get it on the hand held.

I did find out the topo west part. I did use Mapsettools to create the files. I have them in a custom folder in Garmin. You see when I try to open the files in map source it always states its not a valid file format. That is why I just drug them over. Wondering if any one has had this happen. I created my .imp files placed into garmin custom folder. Map source would not show the maps, but thats not the issue. I dropped the files onto my micro sd disk. When I re-opened map source I ended up with a warning there is a problem with product 7 instillation, re-instal and open map source again. I went through all the registry issue's found on the net none of them solved the problem. So I removed everything, cleaned up the registry by hand and with Jv16 power tools. Did a fresh install from disk and upgrade down load to ver. 6. xx and still get the same error. Not only that I see my map on the sd card with the gamin file but do not see the map when I attempt to bring it up on the hand held (60 csx) geesh this is driving me nuts.

Thank you all for the help. I think I have it except when I try to create the .imp file I get a error the the layers must be ascending. I look at the properties and the layers are ascending. Is this common? Thanks-

I am wondering at this point if since IDL is not licensed and in demo mode if its timing out. Any chance any one knows about this?

I should have given more details. The DEM files are all about 235 megs, they have a lot of contours because of the Olympic mountains. I have the newest version of all of the software installed on a Toshiba laptop running xp with a gig of memory. I got the furthest on my last attempt all the way to 1411 out of 3417 intermediate contours.

well I actually mis-lead as to memory issue, problem is dem2topo gets to some point (say 1181 out 3417 intermediate contours) then just hangs there for hours doing nothing. So I need to use task manager to end the whole thing. I did turn off firewalls, anti virus programs in case they where some how interfering. Have you heard of such thing? Any suggestions?

yes that was the error, case of can not see the problem staring right at the mistake. Now I am wrestling with what appears to be a common issue: DEM2TOPO and memory.

I searched the net and found no other solutions to make the dem files into say 4 small files instead of 1 huge one.

Using the same methods everything worked out fine for transportation, but the hydro still has the same error. Thanks again for all the help, it feels as though I am almost there, great site.
