PS-Nothing larger than 2GB will work in the 60CSX.

I have multiple 2GB cards for my unit so I can load lots of maps to each card, including City Navigator on each one, and simply switch cards when I'm in different parts of the country.

Jeeping, off road type stuff.

Greetings!

I have a 60CSX and the cursory map is stored internal to the memory of your unit, and not on the SD card.  To use the California topo, the best approach is to purchase a 2 GB SD card and put it into your unit.  You can then transfer maps to the unit, up to 2GB.  If you transfer the CA map to the card in your unit, it will overwrite anything stored on the card and it will be gone, gone, gone.

In my case, I have GPS File Depot Arizona Topo, South Dakota Topo, and Garmin City Navigator (purchased from Garmin and installed on my computer) that I have transferred to a 2GB SD card.  I now want to add New Mexico but doing that will "overwrite" and erase everything on the card.  I have two options-purchase another 2GB card for $12 and load NM and City Navigator to that card and then switch cards as I go from state to state.  Or, if there is enough space on a 2GB card, I can load all maps-Arizona Topo, SD Topo, City Navigator, and NM Topo all at one time.

The 24K topos available for free from this site are far superior to anything that Garmin sells.  So, using $100 as a measue of "value" would not be appropriate.

I hope as a relative newbie that I've stated everything correctly and hopefully in an understandable way.

Using The Maps/Garmin Software / Re: Map Transfer

Thanks again, and for the heads up on file sizes vs. 2GB chip.  Chips are pretty inexpensive these days so I think I'll load Arizona and City Navigator to one, and Utah and City Navigator to another, and New Mexico and City Navigator to the third and swap them out depending on which state I'm in.

I excited about getting out to the SW again and being able to use this "new" (for me) technology.

Using The Maps/Garmin Software / Re: Map Transfer

Oz,

Very, very helpful and an excellent explantion.  I appreciate that!

As to "overlays", I'm not sure what those are and perhaps don't need to know at this stage of my education.

However, as to loading waypoints and tracks to my GPS after creating them on ExpertGPS or on MapSource, does that data appear in my GPS "over" whatever map I select on my GPS (Base Map, Arizona Topo, City Navigator?)  I don't know if that is an overlay or not, and if it is, then I do need to know how to use/do overlays.  I suspect an "overlay" based on all my reading is a technique to show another kind of data "over" a map.

As to loading maps to the 2GB card, given your explanation I think I'll load Arizona, Utah, New Mexico and City Navigator in their entirety and "be done with it".  Until you develop South Dakota  :)

Printing:  I would like to print the map and the information in the left hand columns as separate items.  It looks as thought there is a toggle somewhere to do that as sometimes in Print Preview I get the left hand column and sometimes I get the map itself.  I don't know how I'm doing that and need to know for consistent and deliberate use.  Thanks!

You've got an amazing web site and I'm getting much closer to being able to use it in a meaningful way.

Using The Maps/Garmin Software / Map Transfer
November 28, 2008, 02:25:51 PM
Thanks for the reply, Oz, regarding "Card Reader" and Map Transfer.  I now have a card reader and have loaded a portion of Arizona to the card as that is what I'll be using when I get to Arizona.

However, If I purchase Garmin MapSource City Navigator North America DVD to put on my computer and then load to my 60CSX, do I have to load Arizona again?  Seems to be the case given your reply.

If that is the case, then every time I create a series of waypoints and a track on, for example, an Arizona topo that you have supplied, then do I have to re-load all maps, including City Navigator?????

If I load what I call my "mini" maps that I've created in MapSource with tracks, waypoints, etc. to my Garmin using the cable and don't take the Card out of the unit, what does that do?  Does it erase everything on the card?  I have read everything in site and for the life of me cannot figure out how to store and use maps in my Garmin, including those maps, if that's what they are, that I create with routes, tracks, waypoints, etc..   If I load a "mini" map with tracks, waypoints, etc. what am I really loading?  A map or just data that goes over a map, like the Base Map that comes with the unit?  If it is an "overlay", can it overlay the Arizona topo if the topo that I've previously loaded is not erased.  Right now I can turn on the GPS and use the base map.  Worthless!

Good gried, Charlie Brown. I'm sure your prior explanation makes perfect sense to most people but I swear I must be as dumb as a box of rocks.

GPSr Units / Card Reader?-Map Transfers.
November 28, 2008, 06:08:53 AM
I want to transfer the Arizona Topo that I got from this site to my Garmin 60CSX and have read the instructions on this site and in the Garmin user's manual.  What is a "card reader"?

Here is a portion of the instructions from this site:

Now plug your GPS in to the computer or but (I presume the word is "put") the memory card from the GPS (or the one you will use on the GPS) into your card reader.

I want to transfer the Arizona, Utah, and New Mexico topos to a 2GB memory card that I have purchased separately but don't know what a "card reader" is.

Secondly, and more importantly, I don't understand the concept of map transfer in general.  Can one transfer an entire topo, like Arizona as I stated in the prior paragraph?  If I create a "small" map containing waypoints or a route on the Arizona map, do I then transfer the "small" map that I have created and does that map become a "map choice" on my Garmin or does transferring the small map just overlay the big map?   Currently I have just the base map on my Garmin 60CSX and I want to use the device for off roading and hiking in Arizona.  I'm having a very, very, hard time understanding mapping, GPS units, and the use of software like MapSource (and ExpertGPS) to connect the two and use the GPS.
