No Red, only the "My Trails" is transparent. Thanks for the info guys!

I recently uploaded My Trails HQT & POI to Basecamp and transferred it to my nuvi 500. I was hoping this would show up on my custom PA TOPO map I have loaded on the unit but will not. It only shows on the CN map.

My Question: Is there a way to overlay the transparent map to the PA TOPO on BaseCamp?

Just to clarify, by "backup" I meant a copy of all the files that were originally on your Nuvi 1300. But it's also good to have another device to use also.  :)
I misunderstood as far as the back up goes. No I did not back it up, and did not know anything about it untill I read the tutorial you posted Boyd. Thanks for showing me that as I will have to do that with the next unit I get.

I've had the northeast topo for quite a while and ran both city navigator and the topo at the same time for as long as I had the unit. When city navagator disappeared the topo was still on but as I'm driving a blank screen will show at the top and slowly move down as I'm driving, as soon as the "vehicle" gets to the blank area, the unit shuts down. If I leave it off for a few minutes then turn it on, the topo will be back up.

I tried the hard reset as well, that did not work. Well, I guess I could sell it on ebay for a couple of bucks, I can always sell broke electronics for parts and usually get more than I expect. Thanks again for the help guys!

Thanks guys. I do have a back up, my nuvi 500 I use on the 4 wheeler,  also have a super old  nuvi 200 that works great but the maps are way outdated.

Yes, I did realize the 1300 was a "cheap" Christmas sale draw item from about a year and a half ago. The topo worked great up until this happened. It will show the map then as I'm driving the the blank space will show at the top of the unit, the map will be fine until I get into the "blank space" then the unit shuts down.

I drive about 43.000 miles annually around 5 different states, so, I guess I should look into a good unit that I can trust. I love the 500 but that is used mainly off road. So, I guess I'll check the Garmin website and see what they have.

I was heading off to work this morning and like always I plugged in the nuvi 1300 to follow during my 100 mile commute. Well, it just kept shutting down I got frustrated with it and turned it off until I made it to work. When I turned it back on, I had a blank screen, I mean nothing! I was in Morgantown, WV and scrolled to view a larger area, I noticed I 68 and I 79 showed up on the screen but that was it. I checked the maps page and the only thing that was showing was the Norteast topo I downloaded from here, city navigator was totally gone! Would you have any idea what may have happened?

GPSr Units / Re: My nuvi 500 was stolen...

That's a bummer that your nuvi 500 was stolen. I've had one since 2009 and love it. I use it on my ATV and I download the tracks on different trips on Mapscourse and BaseCamp on a map that I downloaded from here. It does have it's shortcomings though and as Boyd mentioned, the new Montana 600 is quite incredible. I'm holding off for another year or so because the advances in the GPS units in just the last 2 years is incredible!

Sorry it took me a couple of days to get back to you astainback. The track I recieved were from a site called ATV trutrax. He has several ORV trails you can download (not free). There is also another site that has the Hatfield McCoy trails on a micro sd card called vv mapping again for a fee. I've been to Hatfield 3 times so far and I have a blast every time I go. The only problem with getting trails from a site like those is the trails change from year to year.

Thanks Alpine! I'll give it a try. Last week I did some riding on the local trails and sent those tracks to mapsource and had no problem with that, but sending tracks from that site online turned out to be a bit different    :)

So it sounds to me like you somehow converted a track to a route... or maybe basecamp just does that automatically?

I'm not sure, just sent the gpx. file to basecamp thent sent it to the nuvi. Unfortunately my laptop with basecamp loaded was infected with a virus and cannot try it out there. Maybe I'll try it on mapsource on my pc.

    Boyd,

I tried exactly what you said. The trail was listed in the nuvi but not checked. When I checked it and selected import it said, Cannot import selected route. The route has too many via points, so how do I change that?

    Boyd and Alpine,

You guys may be right. The trail that was sent to the 500 may be a route or some sort of waypoint instead of tracks. BTW, on BaseCamp the trail shows up as as a pink line with dots and on the nuvi it shows up as black flags. Would that be a symbol for waypoints?

They say that the nuvi 500 is a crossover. ( can be used like a handheld unit and use it in the car because it comes with city nav. and US topo ) I bought it for use on my ATV for this reason. BTW the nuvi 500 is now part of a package on all new Can Am Outlander LTD ATV's. They originally came with the Garmin Quest 2.

I sent them to my nuvi 500, I did'nt try it to the 200 but I only use city navigator on that one. I found gpx. files on pahikes.com and they had a trail listed for the state forest close to where I live. I sent that overlay to the PA planimetric topo on BaseCamp then sent that file to the micro SD and there it was.

I'm glad to see you were able to get your topo working. You mentioned about finding nearby trails to plot, I was able to find some trails that had downloadable tracks and the was able to send them to my nuvi. Just google downloadable GPS trail maps and you would be amazed what's out there!

Well, it was not the display level because I did zoom in and nothing had changed, however, I will try to resend it to MapSource just in case I missed or did something different. Thank you very much for your help!
