Map Making Support / Splitting polygons
October 12, 2009, 03:01:07 PM
In gpsmapedit, is there some way to split polygons like you can a polyline?  I have tried converting to polylines, splitting it, and then converting back to polygons but they don't convert back right.

I want to do this for a cople of things.  Some rivers have changed course and I want to cut out the old location and replace it with the new.

When making transparent maps a major river or big lake crossing a road covers it up.  For a small stream, it is not a problem, but for a major river like the Mississippi, it is a problem.  I usually just edit the nodes and move them close together so it is just barely visible crossing the rd.  But splitting it may be easier.

Map Making Support / River Navigation Charts
April 10, 2009, 09:02:49 PM
http://www.tec.army.mil/echarts/

Anyone look at this site?  In the last couple of months they have posted shapefiles for navigation charts for several rivers like the Mississippi, Illnois, Ohio, etc.  They have PDFs of the charts and all the parts of the charts in shapefiles.  I cannot figure out what most of the stuff is, but there is some interesting data in there that I am starting to add to my trail maps.

If someone understands navigation charts, it would probably be pretty easy to make a Garmin map of the navigation charts.  I do not know anything about river navigation (other than canoing) so I do not understand what all the stuff is.  I started out trying to convert them to a map but gave up.  Maybe someone else might be interested.

Map Making Support / NHD Data download
December 07, 2008, 08:41:34 PM
I got a new computer (vista for the first time) and I got the emails for the NHD data and it will not download.  The messages state:

Please Note:
If you are having problems connecting to the FTP site, you may need to disable you passive FTP setting in Internet Explorer.
To change this setting click Tools -> Options -> Advanced and scroll down
about half way until you find a checkbox for 'Use Passive FTP...'.
If you uncheck this box, you should be able to get to the FTP site.

I did that and it will still not download.  I seem to remember a long time ago I had to change another setting to get it to download.  Anyone know what the setting would be or why I cannot get it to download?

Site Support / Uploading maps
November 14, 2008, 09:28:03 AM
Are there directiosn somewhere on how to upload your maps to the site?  I figured out the install compile now I cannot figure out how to add my maps to this site.  I get to the screen and it asks for one state when my maps cover several states so I am not sure how to handle that.  It also has a screen for content that I have no ideal what that is for.  And how to you get the map bounds for your map set?  Thanks.

I do not have custom types on this maps set , but one of the mapsets I want to make an installer for has custom types.  Do you do any thing different for that set?

Thanks
