BH inAZ,
In fooling with my 60CSx I find the problem much reduced or eliminated by the following.
Select only one map to view at a time (in your receiver) and when you reach a point on the border go to the next state. This works for me even with some of my home made maps enabled. It's possible that in places you may end up in no mans land for a short distance, but even this can be remedied by waypoints if depending on the GPSr for travel/location.
As to your first issue if a map does not cover a given area (which I have had little problem with but the above will work there also) then there is no way to make it do so. something we live with.

Setting to time or distance provides a few more options. I prefer distance for hiking or ATV riding, for other activities something else might be better suited. For example time if you are traveling at 70mph. As has been pointed out saving data to the data card allows for using lots of space. My favorite .10 interval, distance, straigt route use larger interval, curvy route use smaller interval.
All is relative.

The name you give to a mapset in mapsource creates a file that simply lists the various tiles/quads that you selected when making up your mapset. If you should change mapsets in the GPSr and at a later date want to go back to another mapset you can simply select it instead of rebuilding it from scratch.

It would certainly seem you selected the data card as the location to install that map rather than the default location.
Maybe a reformat of the card will work, also might try to reformat thru a card reader if you have one.

To show only certain tiles/quadrants select hide that given map, then check the individual tiles you want to display. Have never done this but see no reason why it won't work. Or the proceedure could be done in reverse, just uncheck tiles not wanted. When you first do this hide all maps first as a check. To make things more understandable for future a map is made up of one or more tiles/quadrants. multiple maps in a gsuppmap.img file is referred to as a mapset.
I know of no way to change the names of individual tiles within a give map. Perhaps someone else does.
From a personal standpoint I disable any map that I don't need at a given time.
Your getting there.

As to reading whats on the SD card itself you actually can in a sense. You see the results of it on your GPSr screen depending on what you select. The GPX files display their contents and the garmin folder gives the gmapsupp file which is nothing more than a filename that contains the maps that have been selected and uploaded to the GPSr. This is the list of maps that shows up when you select map setup on the GPSr. Some or all of these maps can be selected to display or not as the case may be. Disable all maps and you can still see routes/tracks. Also you can see the above files on your computer but the map names will not show in basecamp. What will show in basecamp when your gps is interface connected is ALL the other data on your card.

Any way to keep a copy on the card as well------
Not real sure here what you are asking. To save the tracks to the sd card select tracks-setup-uncheck wrap when full- select data card setup-check log track to data card at top of screen.
If you are talking about old saved logs- I would think you could transfer them to mapsource-then back into the GPSr sd card from mapsource.

Some thing is wrong. The maps would download and install on your computer automatically, but not to the GPSr. After installing on the computer they should show up in mapsource or basecamp which are Garmin software programs designed to load maps in the GPSr. You make no mention of them, do you have those programs on your computer? You do not need both.
What file is it that you see and where do you see it at.

By register I think OP might mean that it's not being selected for "send to device". Clear info means so much. Don't remember seldom_sn but I'm sure some body would have suggested zoom-in-out. Suggest OP that you start all over with your raw data and see what turns up. you now have more experience at least.

On the 60 it's not possible to alter the basemap as it's in internal memory and can not be accessed. The daily route log can be selected to be stored on the sd card, lots more room that way. The unit will only store up to 20 tracks in internal memory before it starts to reject them. It's possible your computer system already sees the card in a sense. you need to set the GPSr so it is recognizable. Menu-interface-then make you selection.

I was searching Garmin on another question for a frien when I came across this reference.

Disable city navigator and you should be able to see (view) both the WA topo and northwest trails. The trails map is transparent so it should work with either.

If I remember correctly Garmin says lithium re-chargeables are fine but make no mention of non-rechargeable. Not sure what if anything they would do when hooked up to USB but I think  OZ made ref. to same some time ago.. I use duracell rechargeable NiMH, 1.2v 2000mah & lithium rechargeable 1.5v at 2900 mah in my 60CSx. I have seen reference to non rechargeable lithium providing 50% more power than NiMH. Might try Garmin and see what they say. I did not find any reference to the voltage range you mentioned. 1.7-1.8

Good that things are progressing for you. You did not mention what model GPSr you have but use some caution as to what you do with maps that came with your unit. For example the 100k maps you mention are likely to be in internal memory, so use caution there. Fooling around with data on the sd card presents no problem unless it to came from Garmin.

It's great that Garmin worked out the problem with you. Sounds like you have all your ducks in a row now. I agree with Boyd about the backward capability of file names, although I believe they could maybe do it if they wished. I would love it for my 60CSx. But again it's not likely to happen.
