General Discussion / Re: Smokey Mountains hiking?
July 07, 2010, 01:25:32 PM
there is a very nice Tenn. topo map free to download on this site. Whether it is detailed enough trail wise only you can say. If you do find detailed trail maps they may well be transparent in nature and can be overlaid on this topo.

Looking forward to the NM update!!!!!

Also, using National Geographic topo software on the computer, one can easily find the area, or a peak by searching by name, how does one find that on the downloaded calif topo software from this site.

A simple way to find specific locations is to make them a waypoint in mapsource/basecamp, then place/add those waypoints to your GPSr. Now you can find that certain spot on the GPSr map real easy.

General Discussion / Re: accuracy of trip odometer
June 22, 2010, 01:37:16 PM
I'm going to hazard a guess that the track/route distance is computed by whatever standard  (time/distance so on) that is selec ted, but the trip odometer for distance is line of sight  As the crow flies. this is somwhat born out when using waypoints as go to points. Straight line it is.

Have to pick the old gray matter a moment ref. your NAD 83
When you first load your shape file you select this criteria. When selecting NAD 83 the software may be staying on it's default values for
Coordinate system on the drop down menu box, may need changing to conform to .SHP files
Zone # may also need adjustment so lat/lon co-ords are selecting the proper area to conform to the area the SHP files are identifying.

When I send only my map to the GPS, it doesn't show up and trying to select it in the GPSr results in a freeze-up.

I also discovered that my .shp files are saved in NAD 1983 Projections, and I assume in coordinate system of lat/long...however...when I make these changes in GPSMapEdit, I can't view my .shp files.
After you have sent your map to the GPSr
1) it does not show on screen or
2) it is not listed as an installed map
3)both of the above
4)you are still able to view map in mapsource prior to uploading to GPSr

Anotyher way to work around placing waypoints/tracks into different groups is to use tha folder aspect that shows up in basecamp. Very simple to place things in different "groups" using this method and still easily see what included in each.

Morning seldom_sn
It was a grasp at isolating the problem. Strange happenings. Another thought was that the OP might need to make a change in mapsettoolkit as to how the map is viewed as to draw priority. Will see what shows up.

I am still struggling with this.

For the life of me I cannot get my ArcGIS map maps to show in my 60Csx.

I'm following at least some of the directions correctly because the maps appears in MapSource, but don't on my GPS.
Have you tried sending only your map to the GPSr to see if it is viewable by itself? One at a time if you have more than one.

You do not put a map set together in map set toolkit. Map set tool kit is used to place a completed .img file into map source & basecamp. Your topo and the map you made (county) should each show up in mapsource as individual maps. Follow my last post to put together a .img file that you can send to the GPSr. Remember only one .img file (think of it as a mapset) can be installed in the GPSr at a time. Any file in the unit will be overwritten. There is a map tool symbol in map source that is used to select a map or tiles for upload to the GPSr. Use that on a map and parts or all of the map changes color.

GDB are data base files that are not used by the GPSr, but are used by mapsource and basecamp. they are simply a file that contains data to make up a something else. for example a complete mapset that you might have used in the past. by having the GDB file you can easily reassemble the map set. A set of waypoints/tracks can also be saved this way. Remember when saving tracks to your unit you can only have 20 individual tracks saved.
Waypoints & tracks are not saved as part of a map and cannot be added to same. They can however be uploaded to the GPSr by selecting them and they will then be displayed along with any loaded maps.

When you save it in GPSmapedit give it a written name rather than numeric. I use the same name in both places, in the setup of map properties and for the .mp filename. Before starting map set tool kit rename the map .img file to the same 8 digit name you used in gpsmapedit/map properties. Then use that 8 digit number as the filename in mapsetoolkit

It's possible you need to do a hard reset on your GPSr. For the 60CSx push and hold at the same time for about 15 seconds the following.   Q M O P

Is your unit firmware up to date.
don't know what else would cause it to freeze.

A little more info as to what you are doing, where you are at and the steps you have taken will make it easier to get help. Clarify!

Trip and waypoint manager should have come with your GPSr. Sounds like it did not get installed as you cannot download same from here. Training center comes first. Try downloading basecamp directly from Garmin. Basecamp is intended to replace mapsource.
