I usually screw up my NSI files once or twice before I get them right.  In XP the NSI uninstaller cleaned things up nicely, so I could re-try.  Has anyone tried it in Win7?

I so hate having to do a System Restore.

I've got the latest registered version of MapEdit installed on an old XP machine and a new Win7 machine.  (2 installations total) Google maps works fine on the XP machine, but I just get a "Waiting" message in each tile on the Win7 machine.  Konstantin recommended setting up firewall permissions which I did in McAfee.  Still no joy.

Anybody else have any experience with MapEdit and Win7?

Thanks,

Anyone running Win7 yet?

Just tried running my BRCA-Zion-CARE map in a Win7 64Bit 8gig system.  MapSource crashed early, would hardly zoom or pan.  BaseCamp took longer, multiple zooms and pans, but still crashed.

The installer loaded the maps o.k.

I'm still living in an XP world.  Will 64 bit Windows 7 require changes to registry settings?

When I use GM to generate a grid of map tiles it automatically generates a sequential set of Image IDs for the MP files.

When I use GM to edit those MPs a second or third time it generates a new Image ID for each tile I export back to MP.  I thought if I didn't use the template during the export I could suppress the new numbering, but that didn't work.  So now I've got a set of Image IDs that are all out of sequence.  Would that be a problem for mapsets uploaded to GPSfiledepot?

I'm using GM for the edits because its global search and edit features are more versatile than GPSMapedit, which would preserve all the header info.

The only way I've figured to suppress the automatic Image ID numbering feature in GM is to manually enter a number in the export box.  If anyone else has a better way, I'd appreciate a tip.

Another TYP question.

I got a nice functioning tan (ff6600) TYP polygon on a sample map, and uploaded the map to both my 60CSX and my OR 300.  It looked OK on both GPSrs.

Then I decided to change the color to green (006666).  When I compiled everything, and uploaded it, it was green on the 60CSX, but STAYED TAN on the OR 300.

Worse, my test polygon showed up on the OR 300 even after I used Windows Explorer to change the gmapsupp.img to one that didn't have the polygon on it.  The only way I was able to get rid of it was to create the gmapsupp.img with no custom TYP in MapSource and send it to the OR.

I'm just starting to make custom TYPs.  I was looking at the MapWel site for a TYP editor, but they mentioned that some Garmin's don't support custom TYPs.  If I want to create a map for general distribution, will custom TYPs reduce the usefulness of the map significantly?

When I put "none" for the second color in the polygon fragment below the polygon (which should be tan) shows up white when loaded onto my 60CSX with Sendmap 2.0.  When I replace "none" with another color value it shows up tan as expected.

This fragment was lifted (then edited) from the sample in the cgpsmapper 9.9 download.

Thanks in advance.

I just tried using #000000 as the transparent color definition instead of "none" and it seems to have worked.  Polygon is tan.  Has anybody had any success with "none"?

Map Making Support / 2 PostGreSQL Questions
October 28, 2009, 10:20:09 AM
1) I see an extended tutorial using PostGreSQL to add MP_Types to NHD shapefiles.  Are there other applications for PostGreSql, because I can assign a lot of types (except those in question number 2 below) just using a GM script?

2) In the waterbody portion of that tutorial I see the script assigning multiple MP_Types to a particular fcode based on the area of the waterbody.  When I look at the cgpsmapper manual I see the types, but the description is the same (lake/pond?) for each type.   Will differentiating by area affect anything I can read on the map now (or in the future)?

Thanks,

Apologies for the crosspost also in Groundspeak, but I realized this is probably a better place to ask.

I don't cache. I make maps. I've been watching the buzz about the new Garmin Custom Maps and trying to convince myself that I should spring for an OR 550.

Then I read that I could probably only get 10 miles square of imagery into the unit, so I know that's not going to cover an entire vacations hikes.

For me it will come down to geotagging with the built in camera, the nifty new file management features, but mostly whether the OR 550 will give me better accuracy than a 60CSX with an antenna in my hat.

I've looked at Penrod's and G-O-Cashers reviews of the 550 but I can't find any accuracy measurements. Do such things exist?

Map Making Support / List of Public Domain Data Sources
October 10, 2009, 08:09:03 AM
I'm new to this group, so it may already exist, but it would really be nice to have a list of links to public data sources. The obvious ones are NHD, GNIS, USDS Seamless, NPS DataStor, etc.....

Trails data, however, is really hard to find, as is vector data for ground cover.

Map Making Support / Map Follow Up
October 03, 2009, 07:18:22 AM
I posted a map to your server last Sunday (BRCA-Zion-CARE Hikes). Is there any way that I could tell how many (if any) times it has been downloaded?

Also, I posted a GM script to this forum which appears to have been downloaded twice.  I'd like to get some reaction to it, and maybe borrow a few scripts from other GM users. Is there any way to do that?

Map Making Support / Global Mapper Scripts
September 28, 2009, 08:16:48 AM
If GM is a frequently used mapping tool by users of this site, is there a central repository for GM scripts?

GM 10 and 11 scripting languages support an "Assign_Type" command that lets you translate object types between datasets.  For example, I wrote a script that automatically assigns NHD types of waterbodies and waterways to "perennial" or "intermittent" waterbody and waterway categories in GM.  I'd be happy to share if anyone could use it.

I've been making routable trail maps using mkgmap, the OSM compiler.  These maps route fine on trails and roads, but I can only get an audible annunciation at turns when moving at highway speeds.  When I'm walking I get no signal approaching a turn.

I'd appreciate advice from anyone who has either compiled their own routable maps, or used 24k routable maps on the trail.
