Got it.  So that's what you have to do.  Whether or not you want it or are going to use it, the MyTrails installer "fixes" something in Win7/64.  I assume that eventually the other installers (in years to come) will do the same thing.  But for now, we only need one installer to do the magic for the others.

Then you have to reinstall anything that you had tried to install before using MyTrails.  I did this with the motopo11 and got both of them to show up in BaseCamp.

Not a big issue.  But I wasn't sure that that's what I was reading when each forum post kept linking to yet another forum post, ad libitum.

So now I've got a Windows 7 / 64bit machine and I'm reading through the forums and all of the links; but it's a bit difficult finding what is the exact answer to the problem that BaseCamp doesn't "see" the installed maps.  Is it to just download and run the mytrails installer and that somehow fixes things?

Ah!  That makes sense.  Except I never got my rotund posterior over to one of them to figure it out that way.   

Anyway, now you know what I mean.  There are just a handful of abbreviations like that, some of which are obvious by context (especially if one is familiar with the context), and others that aren't.  I didn't know if there was an abbreviation list somewhere for those.

I'm finding gs near various waterways in the motopo11 map set.  Seems to always be connected with waterways.
N36°37.422' W093° 25.239'
N36°35.802' W093° 18.758'

There are some other abbreviations I've seen, but I can't remember what they are just now.   Thanks.

I had found both of those with a web search and they are helpful, as far as graphic symbols.
What I was really wondering about isn't so much a legend as a list of abbreviations.
Like I say, spg is pretty obvious; well it is to me in the Ozarks because we have so many springs and the continual spg POIs happen right where the springs are, so voila!
But there are other abbreviations, such as gs, that I can't seem to figure out what they are.  There isn't a lot of them, but they piqued my natural curiosity. 
I guess I'll have to treat them like Waymarks and go see what they are!

Some things, such as spg for a spring, are obvious.  But there are some other abbreviations on the topos that aren't so obvious, such as gs (seems to be an island or something?).  Is there a legend somewhere?  Perhaps if these are typical topo abbreviations there might be a web site with them?

By the way, it worked.  I now use the open streem map from the garmin.openstreetmap.nl site for viewing in BaseCamp alone (since it doesn't have all of the US), but I use the map from the wiki site on my device, since it is all of the US.

Anyway, none of this has anything to do with this site.  I like the workings of this site better than either of the others.  Still it is good to know that one can also obtain routable maps from the public domain data.  And I still use the topo data from this site much more than the routable data.

Well, I thought it was so worthwhile to contribute, that I stold, uh, borrowed a card that was accepted and did it that way.  Where there's a will, there's a waypoint.  Even though darn paypal makes it harder to pay than it should be.

Ok.  I got that fixed.  In paypal, if you click the drop-down for the country first (before entering the amount), you get an error message.  From there on, it is confused, even after entering the amount.  It doesn't update anything below the country drop-down.

So I started afresh, put in the US$ amount then clicked the country drop-down to choose United States, and then everything below updated based on that drop-down choice.

Only problem is that paypal won't take my kind of card. 
Oh well.  Next option....

I'd like to donate to the cause, after the wonderful maps I've gotten here and the help with my Garmin for issues that I didn't even know it had!

However, when I use the Donate button and choose the United States, the address still insists on my choosing a UK County, rather than a US State.  The amount does show US$ rather than UK currency.  But I don't want anything to get confused.  When the address area is fixed, I'll be happy to contribute.

Ok.  I was actually talking about http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/OSM_Map_On_Garmin/Download, which does not have installers for BaseCamp or MapInstall.
When I went to http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/ earlier, I thought it was the same thing, except nothing seemed to be working.  Today I went back and saw that I'm not supposed to use IE, so I tried it again.

The drop downs don't work (I tried using the North America dropdown and selecting United States, but it didn't do a thing).  So I enabled manual selection and chose the area that I'll need the most.  When I get the emails I'll give it a try.

One difference is that the OSM site I had gone to allows you to choose the whole US and Canada.  But when I tried to just select the segments for the US on the garmin.openstreetmap.nl site it told me that it was too much, so I had to backpeddle and choose just the areas I was likely to need.  Not a big deal.  It's worth it to have a routable map in BaseCamp without having to have the unit plugged in.

Can you see the new topo's .img file on either your device or your SD card after BaseCamp runs MapInstall to install it?

If you do see it, I wonder if this is another one of those "maximum segments exceeded" issues that MapInstall doesn't complain about, nor does the device, although the latter cannot handle the situation.

Try renaming a map (other than the topo, assuming that you can see it) from .img to .old, then properly eject the device and see if the topo shows up.  You can always rename the other map file from .old back to .img after this test, so there's nothing lost.

Well, that's the kind of OSM that I'm talking about.  But note that they don't install in such a way that MapSource or BaseCamp recognize them.  Yes, I'm aware of all of those tools listed in the OSM sites.  Still very confusing to take a gmapsupp.img (or renamed) and figure out how to make the .tdb file and registry settings so that MapSource and BaseCamp can recognize it on the local PC.
One of the main issues is trying to figure out what to use for a family ID.  I wouldn't want to accidentaly pick one that is already being used by one of the other maps.  I wonder how folks choose family IDs so that they don't clash.

I noticed that all of the wunderbar maps on this site are topos, which is great because that's what I use the most.  I was wondering if there are any routable maps also.  I've done a browse, but I don't see them.

I've downloaded a map from the Open Street Map site, but it is only in the unit and not visible in BaseCamp or MapSource unless my unit is plugged in -- in which case those programs are actually reading the map on the unit.  Yes, there are instructions on how to possibly get them to be recognized by MP or BC, but they are excessively complex!  Too bad that they don't have installers like this site uses, but that is their (OSM) issue.

So I was just wondering if I'm missing them or if the real goal of this site is just to handle the great topos.  (Don't think I'm looking a gift horse in the mouth.  I love this site.  Just making sure I didn't miss something; which is possible in my old age...)

When you say "It won't let me" are you talking about BaseCamp?  When you plug your unit into your PC it takes a while for the PC (whatever flavor) to recognize the unit & its micro SD and "mount" or "install" them as drives.  Furthermore, when you bring up BaseCamp (or even if it is already running) there is another delay (even if your PC already recognized the unit & micro SD) before BaseCamp recognizes them.

Make sure that you give BaseCamp enough time to recognize your unit and micro SD card.  They will show up at the bottom of the upper left window below the My Collection folders/lists.  When BaseCamp is showing them, then you can right click on the micro SD card line and begin installing your maps.  BaseCamp will bring up Garmin's MapInstall.

(Or, for that matter, you can look in your Garmin program menu and bring up MapInstall directly.  But I prefer to always start with BaseCamp.)
